The Local Motion Surf Into Summer presented by Billabong finished off the three day holiday weekend at the Ala Moana Bowl with head high surf, tons of prizes and burgers on the beach for all the contestants in wrapping up the biggest amateur contest in Hawaii.
When all was said and done, 84 stoked-out surfers went home with trophy and goody bag in hand and another successful event brought in the summer surfing competition with some high paced energy in the water. Leading the charge was Brennan Boudreau from Makakilo, taking top honors in the Open Men with the north shore's Kiron Jabour winning the prestigous Junior division.
For Jabour, it was just another feather in his cap as he took control of the final against a very strong field of competitors including the high profile John John Florence (2nd), "big air" specialist Kainoa Haas (3rd), westside's Hizon Linkee Jr. (4th), Jedidiah Pacheco (5th) and Kapu Ping (6th) respectively.
As for Broudreau, summer will be filled with competition as the local boy gets ready to add trophies to his shelf with at least eight more events coming up. In the Boys division, the next generation of Aikau's rose to the occasion as Ha'a Aikau took top honors with gouging top turns on each of his two highest scoring rides, followed by Makai McNamara (2nd) and Ezekiel Lau (3rd).
As always, the Menehune competitors made the most of the head high surf and at times it seemed the sets were close to double overhead. Joshua Moniz took down the field followed by younger brother Seth Moniz, Kalani David, Ivan Florence, Landon McNamara and Kaulana Apo to round out the final. With the event completed, summer surfing is here on the south shore and we're all hoping for a good season of waves.
Special mahalo's go out to Local Motion and Billabong for an entertaining weekend at the Bowl. Heavywater and J-Cut for throwing another unbelievable party, raising over $5000.00 for Access Surf Hawaii. To Monster Energy Drinks, Steinlager, MOBI PCS, Vitamin Water, Wahoo's Fish Taco's, Von Zipper, Kustom and KCCN FM 100.
