Surfing on Maui
While the north coast of Oahu is known as the best surfing area in Hawaii - and arguably the best in the world - Maui has a few decent spots for the enthusiast. For good surfing on Maui, try Honolua Bay, Napili Bay, Baldwin Park, and Hookipa beaches. Many beginners stay at the more gentle beaches between Lahaina and Olowalu, Maalaea Beach, and the beaches in Kihei. Maui does have one spot, however, that has gained worldwide notoriety over the last several years. This is "Jaws". Jaws is a place where, on a good day, waves rise to 30-50 feet high! You can't paddle out to Jaws because the waves are too big, so surfers are using wave runners to pull them out. You can find Jaws about 10 minutes past Hookipa Beach on the road to Hana and then down a road toward the ocean. People are reluctant to give the exact location, but the locals know it well. Just look for the crowds on a good day...
Many shops on Maui rent surfboards and give lessons. A two hour group lesson costs around $55-$60 and a private lesson will run around $80. Many lessons are taught directly to the south of Lahaina Harbor, while some instruction is done at the beach parks between Lahaina and Olowalu or in Kihei. The table below will help you find the rentals or lessons you're looking for. When you've found the place for you, visit our Discounts & Bargains page to save big $$!
