The size of the wave is dependant on weather and follows the seasons. Different areas on Maui will have different wave conditions due to the facing shores. Lahaina area is highly recommended for beginner to intermediate surfing. Kihei area tends to have smaller waves, if much of any, in the summer months. You start on a soft long board to learn the fundamentals, safety, and ocean-awareness. Most group lessons are designed for the beginner. For intermediate and advanced lessons, reserve a semi-private or private lesson and specify your surfing abilities. Surfboard rentals are available to rent, as well, so you can practice all you have learned!
Maui is one of the world's top windsurfing destinations. Ho'okipa Beach Park in Pa'ai is the most viewed surfing and windsurfing areas in the world and is recommended for the highly experienced, world-class surfers and windsurfers. Kahana Beach Park is recommended for intermediate and advanced windsurfers. "Jaws" is one of the biggest and most "ride-able" waves in the world. The winter waves range from 20 – 70 foot faces and are attempted only by world-class surfers. This is a great photo opportunity to take advantage of. Make time on your way to Hana to spend some time here.
