3rd Annual Dempsey Holder Ocean Festival
The Dempsey features a surf contest for all ages, focusing on kids in the community, and honors individuals and organizations that help keep our ocean clean. This year's event will be bigger than ever. Thanks to a partnership with the Tijuana Estuary, we will be joining the Dempsey with the Fiesta del Rio to create a Clean Water Weekend. In addition to the surf contest, the event will include a Kick-off Reception on October 7th to honor the winners
of WiLDCOAST's Environmental Award. The dinner will feature appearances from local surf legends and live music by Lee Coulter and his band, and will feature honorary Event Chairman, Peter Holder, local surfer and son of Dempsey.
Kick-Off Reception
Kick-off the event on Saturday, October 7th, with a free dinner reception for all participants in Sunday's contest. The reception will take place from 6pm-9pm at the Tijuana Estuary, at 301 Caspian Way in Imperial Beach.
Sponsors and contest registrants receive free admission and can pick up their goodie bags that night.

Dempsey Ocean Festival - Clean Water Now!
The Dempsey is more than a surf contest-- it's also a festival to celebrate our coast and ocean and raise awareness of the need for clean water. Our sponsor booths will offer a chance to support local surf businesses and our Clean Water Now! booth will feature fun activities for kids. Kids can create their own beach closure signs, complete ocean illness surveys for prizes, participate in a beach clean up and more.
Our annual raffle offers a chance to win cool prizes, like surfboards and other cool gear, while raising funds for our Clean Water Campaign.
Fiesta del Rio
Each October, Fiesta del Río celebrates the many cultures and unique biological diversity of our borderlands during National Wildlife Refuge Week and in honor of National Estuaries Day. California State Parks, the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex, and WiLDCOAST host an exciting array of activities for the entire family that highlight the environment and cultures of the surrounding Tijuana River Estuary, an area that in the past
has been home to Kumeyaay, Spanish and Californio alike.
Join us Sunday afternoon for activities ranging from children's games, dancing, and entertainment like Dr. Zoolittle and his wonderful show about the natural world and its creatures. Visit booths featuring San Diego's leading environmental organizations, learn a traditional Californio dance, listen to Native American storytellers, actors telling tales of mystery and adventure, or visit Native handicraft booths featuring the art and pottery of contemporary Kumeyaay artisans. Don't miss the premiere of the Sloughs musical, performed by Mendoza elementary students, based on Dempsey Holder and the brave early surfers of the huge waves off the Tijuana River mouth.
Take in the live creation of an Urban Environmental Art mural by students of renowned muralist Victor Ochoa. Finish off the day by enjoying a mariachi band from the Sweetwater Union High School District and the environmentally-conscious reggae band Burnt.
