South Surf 48

YOU DONT WANT TO MISS THIS ONE!!!! From the Desk of Dan Parker!! BIG SHOTS!!! Texas Surf Photographers exhibit!!

This exhibit will feature more than 150 smokin’ surf shots by 12 different surf photographers from up and down the Texas coast:

* Jimmy Metyko,
* Lance Gandy,
* Billy Hill,
* Mike Boyd,
* G. Scott,
* Dallas McMahon,
* Jon Steele,
* Wade Dunkin,
* Chuck Turkington
* Becky McCormack.

My wife, Michelle, and I also threw some of our own work in. Each photographer gets his or her own part of the surf museum wall, and every photo will be accompanied by caption information on who is in the photo, where it was shot and maybe a little story behind how the photo came about.

Some of my favorite stuff in this exhibit: Metyko’s early photos of Tom Curren in Santa Barbara and a three-shot sequence he snapped of Kelly Slater surfing Bob Hall during an ‘80s contest; a great-big Gandy photo of a fully rainbow arching over a Galveston surf spot; Hill’s up-close-and-personal tube shots on the North Coast; Boyd’s shots of surf legends on the North Shore and his stories behind the shots; Steele’s tack-sharp images of California pros shredding at BHP and Fish Pass; Dallas McMahon’s artsy BHP shots; McCormack’s dreamy photos of the glassy blue waters of South Padre; Turkington’s photos of all kinds of shredders at South Padre; and Dunkin’s shots of hulking hurricane surf at South Padre.

As for the legendary G Scott, I haven’t seen his photos yet, but he told me he has a bunch of them mounted and ready to hang, and we all know the high quality we’ve come to expect from him. I think pretty much all of the photographers have told me they plan to attend. Please pat them on the back for me if you see them, because they came up with some really nice stuff for this exhibit.

Among other folks we expect to be in attendance will be Jimmy Metyko and his friend, former Surfer magazine editor Sam George. And Sam’s wife, Nia Peeples. (She’s a Hollywood actress. Google her.)

The exhibit opens to the public at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6. (Metyko and Sam George will be there.) As you probably know, this new exhibit is part of the overall Water Street Surf, Art and Music Fest taking place June 5-7. Plenty of art, music and surf to go around. Hope y’all can make it. Say hi if you see me.
