Sun, surf , seachange with a tinge of brown
23/01/2009
Well it's been three weeks since I arrived in Port Macquarie and I've been struck by how beautiful the area is. For locals this is no surprise. It's also a great place to have a dog. My labradoodle Frankie loves the change from living in a pebbled courtyard to having a big back yard with grass and trees. She also loves the dog friendly beaches which are a blessing for a dog owner.
There really is nothing better than watching your dog running around on the beach with wild abandon. I've been enjoying taking Frankie to both Lighthouse beach and Nobby's beach and it's good to see that waste disposal bags are available to dog owners in case you forget to pack one on your way out of the house.
But there's something I've noticed, despite the free bags, some people are seemingly blind to the fact that their little bundle of fluff and fur has decided to go to town on the beach. It's a problem and I shudder to think what it's be like going for a dip once the tide has come in and washed out all the poo. It gives a whole new meaning to the term 'getting dumped'.
Both the Port Macquarie Hastings Council and the Coffs Harbour City Council have the power to penalise dog owners who fail to remove dog faeces - $275. Maybe people are unaware or just don't care. It's a crying shame.
