From sleet and snow to sun and surf: Shoalhaven Campus welcomes two new studentsKatie Anderson and Victoria Valente have just arrived in the sunny Shoalhaven from London, Canada where the daily temperature is currently sitting around minus 15°C.
The students, from the University of Western Ontario, are completing a six-week research and fieldwork placement as part of their Masters in Occupational Therapy program at UOW’s Shoalhaven campus.
While staying in Nowra they will gain clinical experience working at the Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital, and research and community engagement experience at the University.
“We are delighted to have this opportunity and we look forward to developing our research and clinical skills in this international setting,” said Katie.
“So far we have enjoyed the Australian warmth and hospitality and look forward to living and working here for the next few weeks.
“We are also excited to have the opportunity to enjoy the Australian summer as Canada is currently experiencing a very cold winter!” she said.
Dr Alison Wicks, the Director of the Australasian Occupational Science Centre (AOSC), is supervising Katie and Victoria during their stay.
As part of their research, the students will be developing occupational profiles of local youth who are active users of the new Nowra Skate Park. The students will also develop a photo essay highlighting the positive influence of active participation in a community program.
They plan on speaking to various community groups, promoting the influence of occupation on health and wellbeing.
“We are looking forward to engaging with the local community and relating it to our future clinical practice,” said Victoria.
“The combination of the research and clinical practice is really exciting as it is a unique opportunity we would not have received at home.”
Katie and Victoria are the second pair of Canadian students to complete fieldwork placements at the Shoalhaven Campus
