notes
Bruce and Son began playing in their Cypress, California living room after Adam, at the age of 10, began playing the drums. Yes, the drums are in the living room. So far, the neighbors haven't complained...at least, we haven't heard the police knocking on the door because the music is so loud.
Anyway, Adam is now 12 and he's blossomed into a remarkable drummer. Daddy Mark is pretty good on the guitar and handles the two vocals on the album (the spoken word "St. Francis by the Sea" and the song "Can't Rock and Roll at Home.") However, there's no doubt that the kid is the star in this band. He sounds like he's been behind the drums for about 20 years. Adam is the surfer in the family, which explains why he wanted to play surf music when they first started jamming.
Bruce and Son's brand of surf instrumental is fun, melodic, and catchy. This is no long droning jam band; the songs are two to three minutes long and very danceable. And a drum solo in nearly every one!
The CD was recorded on a digital recorder in their living room, and was recorded "live"--that is, no overdubs.
By the way, Bruce and Son have been playing the OC for about a year and get a great reaction. Crowds form to watch the duo (okay, mostly Adam) and they're getting more fans every day. Although Daddy Mark hasn't yet quit his job at the Orange County Public Defender's Office, it's just a matter of time...
