The Surf 14

The Netherlands have an advanced national network for repositories and the dedicated objective of boosting this infrastructure towards enhanced publications. This national network has been established as a result of the DARE programme, which is now being continued as the SURFshare programme 2007-2010; focusing on the innovation of the scholarly information cycle. The activities in the Netherlands managed by Stichting SURF serve as a model of how to conceive innovative developments concerning enhanced publications in DRIVER-II. For the European activities like the DRIVER-II project, nearly all participants in the SURFshare programme form a Joint Research Unit (JRU). This JRU consists of:

* Stichting SURF : in the DRIVER-II project SURF will be the representative of the JRU, being the beneficiary of and taking the responsibility towards, the EC. Stichting SURF will organize the administration, internal communication and activities of the JRU in the DRIVER-II project, enabling the institutions to focus on the content of the project.
* The following Dutch participating institutions will be linked to SURF as third parties:

* Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (Erasmus University Rotterdam, EUR)
* Koninklijke Bibliotheek (the National Library of the Netherlands, KB)
* Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, KNAW),
* Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (University of Groningen, RUG)
* Stichting Katholieke Universiteit Brabant (Tilburg University)
* Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam (VU)
* Technische Universiteit Delft (Delft University of Technology, TUDelft)
* Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e)
* Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA)
* Universiteit Leiden (Leiden University)
* Universiteit Twente (University of Twente)
* Universiteit Utrecht (Utrecht University)
* Universiteit Wageningen (Wageningen University)
* Universiteit Maastricht (Maastricht University)
* Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen (University of Nijmegen)
* Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NVO)

The activities in the SURFshare programme and the DRIVER-II project will be mutually reinforcing, especially in the domain of the innovative ‘Discovery’. In collaboration with the DRIVER partners, demonstrators will be developed to clarify the added values and variety in the processing of enhanced publications. The demonstrators will clarify metadata creation; processing and transport (interoperability via OAI-PMH or other similar protocols); and representation mechanisms. Special attention will be paid to the solutions for long term preservation. Practical solutions and networking activities will strengthen the Research Infrastructure and the DRIVER network of repositories, thereby disseminating the knowledge gained in the DARE network of repositories to a global audience
