Round two of the Nova Scotia Surf League was completed July 9 at
Rissers Beach, in Lunenburg County. About 45 people from across
the province participated in lifesaving sport competitions.
The four clubs participating included the Cape Breton Threshers,
Central Province Makos, Western Province Hammerheads and the
Dalplex Tigersharks.
The Nova Scotia Surf League is a five-round competition series
based on lifesaving sport. Athletes who hold a minimum Bronze
Medallion certification and are at least 16 years old, compete on
the beach and in the ocean in various athletic events. Events
included a two-kilometre beach run, a rescue board race, a run-
paddle-run and a surf teams race.
Event winners include Heather Hanlon in the women's board race,
Sandra Snowdon in the two-kilometre beach run and run-paddle-run,
and Heather Hanlon, Jessica McLellan and Tara Bellefontaine in
the surf teams event.
Jason Cross led the male competitors with wins in the board race
and the run-paddle-run, Ryan Salsbury won the two-kilometre beach
run and Mitchell Crossman, Chris Hanlon and Jamie Wildsmith won
the men's surf teams event.
Surf League rookie Sandra Snowdon of Sackville, N.B., was
impressive in her debut with wins in the two-kilometre beach run,
the run-paddle-run, a fourth place finish in the board race, and
a second place finish in the surf teams event with teammates
Jennifer Stewart and Elaine Munroe.
National Team member and Surf League veteran Jason Cross led the
way for the Tigersharks with wins in the board race and run-
paddle-run as well as a second place finish in the two-kilometre
beach run. The Dalplex Tigersharks narrowly won the competition
over the Western Province Hammerheads.
Round three of Surf League, the Nova Scotia All Womens
Competition, will take place Tuesday, July 15 at 1 p.m. at
Rissers Beach, near Bridgewater.
