Abstract:

Conflicts of interests between anglers and surfboarders are increasing in the Netherlands. Regulations are needed regarding the use of large areas of water, and the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries has suggested that zoning be promoted using existing legislation. The Federation of Angling Societies undertook a study to discover where and how clashes of interest have occurred; how big a water surface is used for wind surfing and in what kind of area; and the difficulties the fishermen suffer. A questionnaire was used. Conclusions indicate that clashes mainly occur on waters frequently used by both types of users; surfboarders sail too close to the bank and use the fishing bank as their landing area; they sail over fishing lines, put boards on the fishing bank and chase away the fish. Parking areas have become too small to serve all interests.
