A family tradition since 1956, Bennett Surfboards has been in the surfboard business longer than any other Australian manufacturer.
Surf Life Saving introduced Racing Malibu's to Australian Titles in paddle board races and iron man competitions in 1962 and with longboards, was incorporated into Bennett's surfboard production. Bennett's has always maintained its strong roots in the Surf Life Saving environment. And for the last 40 years, has supplied many paddle board and rescue boards to overseas and local clubs. The Bennett name is highly valued amongst the Surf Life Saving fraternity and many Australian and World Titles have been won on Bennett boards.

Bennett paddlers Jeremy Cotter and Dean Mercer both recorded podium finishes in the Bridge to Beach surf ski race held in Sydney on Sunday. The event was an incredible spectacle, with over 500 paddle craft lining up under the Sydney Harbour Bridge before racing up the harbour towards Manly. Jeremy, who won the event in 2008, led the first 10.5km before being overpowered in a sprint for the finish by 5-time Olympian, Clint Robinson.
From the word go, everyone knew that the pace would be on the whole way. At a distance of only 11km, the Bridge to Beach is the shortest race on the ocean paddling circuit, and is a relative sprint in comparison to many of the events that the top athletes are currently training for. The front pack of ten paddlers formed early in the race, with everyone jostling for the best wash in the flat conditions and oncoming tide. As the leaders continued to surge, some of the group dropped off the pace, until only Cotter and Robinson were left. Robinson, who used this race as a warm-up before the Aussie surf titles in Perth, appeared totally calm the whole way - doing just enough to stick with Jeremy until the sprint finish.
It took the leaders just over 45 minutes to complete the race (at an average of about 4 minutes per km, that’s pretty quick by anyone’s standards!), with the bulk of the field coming in at a more leisurely pace.
Cotter, who will not be racing at Aussies, is currently preparing for an ocean race in Spain in early May, where he will be pitted against the best paddlers from Europe and South Africa in a downwind course on the Mediterranean Sea. Both Cotter and Robinson will then go on to the Molokai surf ski race in Hawaii in late May to test themselves against the world’s best ocean paddlers.
Australian Kayak Championships
Murray Stewart, a long-time team Bennett paddler, has been named as a member of the senior Australian kayak team to race at kayaking world cups in Europe this winter. Murray picked up four Australian titles in Perth this weekend, with wins in the K1 500m, K2 500m, K4 500m and K4 200m. Murray and K2 partner, Jacob Clear, also picked up silver medals in the K2 1000m and K4 1000m. Winning the K1 500m title is a big step in Murray’s career, with the victory dampened only by the knowledge that Olympic champion, Ken Wallace, was injured for the event. Murray beat Ken at Grand Prix 2, the most recent regatta at which the pair has raced against one another.
If Murray can perform at the kayaking world cups, he will stand a chance to be selected for the team to represent Australia at the kayak world championships in Canada later this year.
Nick Dawe, also a team Bennett paddler, was selected for the Australian u23 team to race at u23 regattas in Bydgoszcz (Poland) and Bochum (Germany). This is Nick’s first Australian kayak team and is certainly not going to be his last.
Both Nick and Murray will now set their sites on the open surf ski races at the Aussies in Perth this week. Murray has been selected in the NSW interstate team to compete earlier in the week, whilst both of them will be looking to back up from an incredible medal haul at the NSW state championships. Murray won the NSW single ski, double ski and mixed double ski, and both Murray and Nick were part of Manly’s winning ski relay and taplin teams.
