Why is sun protection important?
Everyone knows by now that sun exposure may cause wrinkles, spots, and skin cancer. It may even cause melanoma, one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer.
The American Cancer Society states that:
* Research shows a link between sunburns in childhood and an increased risk of melanoma and skin cancer later in life.
* Protecting skin from the sun during childhood and adolescence is very important in reducing the risk of skin cancer as an adult.
* About 80% of skin cancers could be prevented by protecting skin from the sun's rays.
The American Cancer Society recommends a 3-prong approach to sun protection with their "Slip! Slop! Slap!" campaign. They suggest you "slip" on clothes made of "tightly woven fabrics", "slop" on 15+SPF sunscreen, and "slap" on a hat that shades your face, neck and ears.
