Surf Forecast 53

A bronze bust of surfing pioneer George Freeth has been swiped from the Redondo Beach Pier, where it had smiled on surfers for more than 30 years.

The life-sized bust was missing from its pedestal when the sun rose Thursday morning. Authorities say it was stolen between midnight and 5 a.m.

Police Sgt. Phil Keenan says say the motive could be simple vandalism or the value of the metal, which is 88 percent copper and 12 percent tin.

Police are combing junkyards and poring over surveillance tapes looking for clues.

Freeth has been credited with bringing surfing and much of modern beach culture to the mainland United States from his native Hawaii 100 years ago. The bust was dedicated in 1977.
