Surf Lessons 6

Everything You Need to Know About Learning to Surf

If you’re looking to learn how to surf, there are many roads to take.
Googling surf camps in your area is probably the best way to start.

You can also check out www.AQUASURF.com for quality surf instruction.

You can sign up for many different types of surfing lessons: Adult Classes, Surf Camps, Group Lessons, and Private Lessons. Adult Surf Classes might be good if you are just looking to pick up a little surfing while you are at the beach. Private Lessons of course will be more expensive, but if you’re serious about improving then they might be the best way to go. The best way to really get better is to set a schedule and surf every day. In your lessons, you will start off with a land instruction. This will teach you how to paddle properly, how to sit on a turn your board around, and how to be safe on your board, so that you do not harm yourself or others that are in the water. Once you are ready to go out in the water, your instructor can guide you out. When you are just beginning, the instructor will hold your board and push you into the waves. Once you are advanced enough, your instructor will just grab his own board and accompany you, advising you on which waves to paddle into and critiquing your technique so that you can improve. Practice every day and you will become an expert in no time. Surfing requires dedication and a positive attitude. If you try hard and continue to work at it, you can get very good in a short period of time.
How to Pick a Good Surf Instructor

Picking a good instructor is a very important step in learning how to surf. A surf instructor should always be experienced. Sometimes you might be surfing in less than ideal conditions, and you want an instructor that can deal with inclement weather or big waves. The instructor should be a strong swimmer and should be very knowledgeable about both the ocean and about weather conditions. It is also very important that you get along well with your teacher. An instructor should have a very positive attitude and should be patient and understanding. They must be willing to help you even if you are just beginning to learn. It is especially important to develop a good relationship with your instructor if you are going to be very serious about getting good at surfing, because you will be working with them for a long time.
The Best Places to Surf in California

Once you are good enough at surfing, you will be able to travel to many different surfing destinations. California has some of the best surf spots in the world. If you are further up North, around Marin County, Bolinas is a great place to visit. It often becomes crowded but it is a good area if you are new to surfing. Near San Francisco, Ocean Beach is excellent on a good day – the waves go on and on. Near San Mateo there are three distinctive beaches, each with their own characteristics. Linda Mar is a consistently good break but is never very large; Mavericks has fairly huge waves but is less consistent; and Half Moon Bay Jetty is the recipient of many Southwest swells and as such is a great spot for learners and beginners. There are also awesome surf spots in Southern California. While in San Jose, be sure to check out La Jolla shores. Nearer to the O.C. you’ll find Huntington and Newport Beach, as well as Trestles, perhaps one of the most famous surf spots in the world. Finally in Los Angeles, be sure to check out Malibu, the best known surf spot in the state. There are three different points, each with different breaks. You’ll be sure to catch a good wave here.
