surf side91

Surfside Beach is the Grand Strand's leading family beach as well as a popular retirement haven and bedroom community for Myrtle Beach. With a moderate climate, affordable housing, low crime rate and excellent school system, the region is known for its high quality of life.
Surfside Beach is a small city with its own local government, police chief and fire department. The laid-back atmosphere makes it a great place to relax or retire, but bustling Myrtle Beach is just up the road for those in search of excitement.
Location & Recreation

Located in Horry County, Surfside Beach is about eight miles south of Myrtle Beach. The region is home to numerous attractions, including more than 100 golf courses and scores of restaurants, shops, theaters and entertainment venues. Golf is king in the Myrtle Beach area, and that's also true in Surfside Beach. Fishing, boating and other water sports remain popular as well.

Houses & Pricing

Prices for condominiums and townhouses start as low as $35,000 for small one-bedroom units and range up to $400,000 and more for larger units on the beach. Single-family homes start at $100,000 and range up to $1 million for beachfront homes with scenic ocean views.
Surfside Beach does not allow mobile homes.
History

In the late 1800s, the Burroughs & Collins Company began developing the area that's home to modern-day Surfside Beach. The firm started as a timber and turpentine producer, but the owners soon saw the resort potential along the Grand Strand. In 1901, Burroughs & Collins built the beach's first hotel, the Seaside Inn. At that time, oceanfront lots cost $25, and buyers got an extra lot for free if they built a house valued at $500 or more.
The community, then called New Town, was eventually renamed Myrtle Beach. Surfside Beach is one of the communities that developed along the city's south side.
