I really pride myself on insane blog titles, ones that are mysterious and hyperbolic and that severely overplay their importance. And this blog is no exception.
But check out these insane skateboards. My kids and I have been riding carve boards for years, but these Hamboards are a whole different deal. Granted, they still can't possibly afford total surf stoke, but what does? I really like the size that lets the rider actually lay down and paddle...surf school possibilities? The bottom line is that surfers need to stay active when out of the water. Cross-training is essential for proper surf fitness and skateboarding is a perfect way to keep your knees, hips, and back lubed up for the next session.
Speaking of missing surf...or not "missing" it at all...fortune strangely finds the original Pipe Master, Gerry Lopez, holed up in Bend, Oregon. Okay, "holed up" is misnomer since he has carved out a cool surf/shape/snowboard/family life for himself. After having pioneered the (then) limits of Pipe and essentially "found" G-Land in Bali, Lopez headed North on a surfer's road less traveled. Read Lopez's story. It's interesting that innovators and leaders in life forge ahead paying no mind to the boundaries that culture constructs. Now, obviously, Lopez has many years of surf industry cred and Hawaiian bruddahood to draw on for his forays back and forth to the islands and Bali, but it's all construction of his own making. Not ironic at all: Gerry Lopez's latest book is called Surf Is Where You Find it.
Oh yeah, and a video of a dude riding the world's longest surfboard...uhg!
