Wavefinder Release Surfing: The Manual
Over 50 professional surfers contribute their insight and knowledge to surfing’s first ever skills and coaching manual.

The publishers of a best-selling range of surf travel guidebooks today announced the release of a ground-breaking new guide to advanced surfing techniques.

Compiled by the former editor of Surfer magazine Jim Kempton, Wavefinder’s Surfing: The Manual is a new instructional guide for intermediate and advanced surfers looking to improve their skills in the water.

Drawing together contributions from over 50 of the biggest names in professional surfing, the 336 page book covers every aspect of the sport many consider an art form. The bulk of the content is given over to specific techniques and manoeuvres, with supporting chapters covering topics as diverse as oceanography; diet and fitness; survival in extreme conditions; and turning professional.

“With Surfing: The Manual we set out to create the definitive guide to surfing - from the perspective of the active surfer,” said Wavefinder’s Jeremy Goring. “The book is perfect for surfers who are looking to take their surfing up a level or two, whether it’s nailing new manoeuvres, challenging themselves in bigger waves or surfing their first heats in competitions.

“In Surfing: The Manual Jim Kempton has put together a comprehensive guide of the key skills and techniques every surfer needs. Never before has such an esteemed assembly of the world’s greatest surfers come together to provide the deepest insights and secrets of surfing.”

The content of Surfing: The Manual is in many regards a distillation of Kempton’s 25 year journey through the world of cutting-edge surfing.

Based on a series of interviews with a host of the world’s best surfers, Kempton has applied his discerning editorial judgement to extract gems of wisdom from some of the sport’s greatest exponents - from Tom Curren to Kelly Slater; Peter Townend to Mick Fanning; Gerry Lopez to Dave Rastovich.

In his foreword to the book, Steve Pezman, publisher of The Surfer’s Journal, is full of admiration for a unique tome which is set to become the definitive skills and coaching manual for the sport of surfing.

“Jim Kempton has thought analytically about surfing for decades, as a long-time, vastly travelled recreational surfer, as editor and publisher of Surfer magazine, and in various capacities for large surfing corporations. Kempton has crafted a stimulating book to help propel you into the next realm of advanced wave riding,” says Pezman.

The text is illustrated with over 600 images drawn from the archives of respected surf photographers Jeff Divine and Tom Servais. Step-by-step photographic sequences are matched with intuitive training captions, covering every manoeuvre in detail.

Editorial contributions feature experts in their fields such as the surf historian Drew Kampion and oceanographers Sean Collins and Ricky Grigg; while surfing’s ultimate waterman, Laird Hamilton, details the gruelling training regime that allows him to continually push the boundaries of what is considered possible on a surfboard.

Surfing: The Manual is on sale from mid-June with a recommended retail price of £24.95/€29.95. The book is available from selected surf shops and booksellers and also from www.wave-finder.com. Trade enquiries to Nick Rink at Wavefinder on nick@wave-finder.com.
