surf travel 126

As recent as a few years ago, surfers in Pavones would stay in town from April to December, blindly awaiting the next strong south swell and sprinting to the beach to be first in line. Surfers today roam as a well-informed tribe, using the Internet as a guide and descending on spots just hours before the best waves of the season. Although some die-hard purists will still spend an entire trip in a single locale, most surfers now travel to beaches along the entire coast, confident of taking the best sets from each.

There are many websites that offer surf-relevant information for all parts of the world; here are a few of the best for Costa Rican breaks:

wetsand.com. Best for tide and swell predictions, with the height, period, and direction of wind and swells on easy-to-read weather maps.

windguru.com. Developed with windsurfing in mind. It has the most accurate 2-day wind predictions on the web.

crsurf.com. Focuses mainly on Costa Rica, with information on contests and country-wide tide charts. It also offers international weather models and links to other sites about Costa Rican surfing.

rovercam.com. Based in Playa Hermosa and devoted solely to Costa Rica. It constantly updates with weather predictions, photos, and videos of the previous day's best surfing.
