SURF’S UP FOR HAWAIIAN BEACH PARTY
24-10-2008
Plans are underway at the City of Mandurah to throw a Hawaiian-themed beach party ‘Surfing Together’ on November 29 to introduce people with disabilities to the thrill of surfing.
The ‘Surfing Together’ initiative is a one-day event to celebrate International Day of People with Disability, but to be successful it not only needs participants, it urgently requires volunteers.
Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey urged people in the community, those with surfing ability and those without, to volunteer for a great beach party.
“Accredited trainers will be conducting the surfing lessons so no particular experience is necessary. We’re just looking for people who can help on the day to support participants in and out of the water and with other activities,” Mayor Creevey said.
“We’re already planning to hold a training meeting before the event to ensure volunteers have plenty of opportunity to find out what’s involved and ask questions.
“By the way, to anyone who owns one of those real Hawaiian shirts, start looking for it now because it could win you a prize at the beach party.”

Surfing Together is funded by the Department of Sport and Recreation and supported by the Disability Services Commission and Mandurah Disabled Sport and Recreational Respite (MADSAR).
