Marketing:
Senior Marketing Executive

Responsible for defining, developing, executing, and managing integrated strategic and tactical marketing and communication plans and programs providing clear and compelling trade and consumer value propositions. Primary objectives are to fuel revenue growth, improve relevance among display advertisers and drive increased numbers of unique user site visits.

Primary Responsibilities:

* Assume overall management and budgetary responsibility for a full range of classic marketing activities, including company positioning, media campaigns, competitive and customer intelligence, promotions, and internal and external marketing communications and public relations.
* Drive the development of a robust trade marketing/communications program designed to heighten the visibility of About.com and its value proposition , resulting in increased agency RFP?s and the number and yield of direct client engagements.
* Build loyalty among the millions of unique site visitors through targeted communications/programs designed to increase the frequency of site visits and levels on engagement once on the site.
* Provide the sales organization with a broad range of products, services and support designed to enhance their ability to effectively engage with prospects and successfully close new deals. Such support shall include product training/education, standardization of messaging and related promotion/collateral materials, actionable intelligence re marketplace/industry/competitor developments and trends and development of a targeted and specific sales pitch designed to improve the ability of the sales team to effectively compete and win.
* Develop and implement consumer research and analysis programs designed to provide a fresh and unique perspective on the About.com audience and its needs, preferences, likes and dislikes etc. Ensure the insights drawn from the research and analysis are distilled into actionable items and shared in a timely manner with the senior management team improving the quality and timeliness of strategic and/or tactical decision making.
* Establish the marketing function and organization as an influential strategic and trusted resource within the organization capable of building and maintain strong cross functional relationships with peer senior executives working jointly to develop products, content and programs focused on driving customer loyalty and retention.

Required Experience/ Attributes/ Competencies:

* A minimum of 15 years experience in all aspects of consumer/trade marketing in a technology/ web-based customer environment gained in either a media, marketing client or agency organization
* A deep knowledge of the advertising community and understanding of how media is bought and sold
* An innovative and visionary thinker capable of defining and articulating About?s value proposition and differentiation in a concise and media friendly manner and devising appropriate, cost effective marketing strategies to communicate the message
* Strong market research/consumer insights skill set with the ability to gather and analyze data extracting actionable and /or marketable insights that can be used to drive business results.
* Exceptional influencing and communication skills
* Keen business acumen with ability to function in a demanding, fast paced, entrepreneurial culture
* Confident, energetic, self motivated, results oriented team player
* Collaborative style with the ability to quickly establish credibility and gain confidence across the organization

About.com is looking for a talented software developer to work with its Ad Sales System Development team. The Ad Sales System Development team builds, maintains, and operates reliable web sales and accounting support systems based on Perl, Oracle, and HTML.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with web based technologies and understand the business ramifications of accurate, reliable, and streamlined sales support systems. This position calls for a motivated and meticulous team player that believes both in maintainable, reliable code and clean, well-documented design. This is a hands-on position that requires both active long term product development management and day-to-day programming, operational and internal request support.

Responsibilities:

* Ensure for the continued accuracy and reliability of Ad Sales Support systems
* Work with other team members and divisions to define and implement needed new business systems
* Continue to proactively improve and enhance Ad Sales systems
* Support the end-users of Ad Sales Support systems
* Integrate numerous external third-party ad sales and finance systems
* Support various business units in understanding and resolving key metrics and numbers of the About service

Requirements:

* Familiar with all of the following technologies/concepts: Perl, CGI, HTML, JavaScript, SQL, XML, shell scripting, version control, object oriented design
* UNIX user skills (UNIX developer skills a plus)
* Able to read and write Perl and proficient in other programming languages
* Strong knowledge of SQL Queries and relational database concepts in either Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or MySQL
* Familiar with or demonstrated ability to learn how to interface with Financial/Accounting packages.

SVP, Advertising Sales

Reporting to the President & CEO of About, Inc., the Senior Vice President, Sales will have responsibility for effectively managing About.com’s online sales efforts with overall accountability for achieving targeted advertising sales revenues. Oversees the development of sales programs and related policies, processes and procedures that are designed to attract new national and key accounts/agencies and enhance sales to existing customers to achieve planned sales growth.

Responsibilities:

* In partnership with the CEO and senior leadership team, provide thought leadership in shaping the organizations advertising sales strategy garnering cross functional internal buy in and support in successfully executing the strategy.
* Translate and manage approved strategies into sales programs incorporating an aggressive, systematic plan for approaching and soliciting new business.
* Build and maintain an effective, accountable and diversified sales team that is focused and consistently utilizes appropriate tools and methodologies required to present a winning proposition to prospective customers
* Plan, organize and lead activities focused on establishing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with key decision makers at agencies and targeted accounts.
* Develop and manage a sales budget and establish appropriate sales quotas and related compensation programs for the sales team.
* Provide guidance to sales leadership and the sales team in negotiating and closing the most complex advertising sales deals.
* Develop and implement appropriate processes to ensure effective sales proposal production (RFP’s) and management of sales contracts

Requirements:

* Sales professional with a minimum of 15 years progressively responsible experience with at least 5 years in a management role.
* Experience with custom publishing in a technology oriented/ web based customer environment.
* A deep knowledge and understanding of the online market, advertising community, customer requirements and how media is bought and sold
* Practical yet creative with the ability to develop new approaches to grow revenue within the constraints of the existing product ( not a branded destination site).
* Flexible and open minded in approach considering the full range of sales opportunities ( premium direct sale to use of ad exchanges) when evaluating customer and business needs.
* Demonstrated accomplishments and leadership through consultative selling in developing new or expanding existing business within the consumer packaged goods and retail brand categories.
* Expertise building relationships with key personnel at agencies and targeted accounts.
* Strong analytical skills with the ability to develop sales forecasts and plans; complete analyses of wins/losses and trends putting in place plans and programs to address gaps/shortfalls or to further capitalize on successes.
* Keen business acumen with the ability to function as a senior strategist with key members of the executive management team at About and the NYTimes.
* An undergraduate degree required; an MBA is preferred
