TreeHugger is helping the masses get hooked on sustainability, and thankfully, it appears the masses are getting hooked on TreeHugger. Press notables have hailed us as “Having Balls,” dubbing us a “green CNN”, and a “Green Blog God.” Media empires like The Oprah Winfrey Show, Martha Stewart and the Sundance Channel have taken note. We've also been honored by several prestigious award ceremonies. In 2006, TreeHugger took home a Vloggie for being the "Best Green Vlog." For three consecutive years in a row (2005,2006,2007) TreeHugger was nominated for a Bloggie, and, within the past two years, The Webby Awards and the South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival have nominated us in various categories. Check out TreeHuggers virtual trophy case here.
TreeHugger is not TreeHugger without our quick-witted, global team of writers. They have the amazing ability to take topics that most of us snoozed our way through in school, and make them the addictive juicy, green bits that they are. TreeHugger's success is also due in large part to our core staff, who, like non-toxic, water-soluble glue, keep the green pieces from falling apart, and of course, to our esteemed board of advisors.
“Sustainability su-shmame-ability,” you say? Don’t write us off yet! With over one million unique visitors we think we’re onto something!
Why is TreeHugger Doing This?
Our environment is currently facing huge obstacles that have the potential to seriously disrupt our future and the future of all our fellow flora and fauna friends. Keeping that in mind, TreeHugger also sympathizes with the fact that most people aren’t willing to compromise their current lifestyle in order to improve our shared environment, so we have created a place where you can discover how to maintain or improve your quality of life while reducing your harmful impact on the earth.
TreeHuggers know that you don’t need to run off to live with the wolves to contribute to the betterment of Mother Nature. (We do, however, prescribe this to anyone with strong urges to pursue cave art and moon howling). TreeHuggers live in the 21st century, make quotidian decisions, consume, have fun and maintain their aesthetic je ne sais quoi.
Knowing that apocalyptic predictions tend to paralyze the masses instead of mobilizing them, we also prefer an enthusiastic, upbeat outlook.
We live green, through education and action.
Who's Behind TreeHugger?
TreeHugger’s success is due in large part to our core staff, who, like non-toxic, water-soluble glue, keep the green pieces from falling apart, and of course, to our esteemed board of advisors.
TreeHugger is written by a team of international expert writers. They pepper the globe from New York to Beijing and everywhere in between. You name the place, and we’re there to dish on the latest in eco-pursuits and products. After all, green is global.
TreeHugger's Core Team
Graham Hill
Founder TreeHugger.com,
Vice President, Interactive Media, Planet Green
Alternately described as Serial Entrepreneur, Do-Gooder and Designer, Graham Hill certainly enjoys variety although now finds his future happily confined to the social entrepreneurship arena. Past businesses include forays into fashion, web-development, viral email and plant-based air filters. In 1995, with his cousin, he started and grew the web-developer, SiteWerks, to 60 people doing work for large companies such as Microsoft and sold it to a New York company in 1998. He currently focuses on pushing sustainability into the mainstream through TreeHugger.com, which in 4 short years has become one of the most respected and trafficked environmental sites on the web. Hill and the TreeHugger.com team recently joined the Discovery Communications family of networks as part of its Planet Green multi-platform, global environmental initiative. Additionally, he owns a product business that sells a New York souvenir he designed a few years ago into 150 stores including MOMA. Graham has a Bachelor of Architecture with distinction from Carleton University in Ottawa and did advanced studies in Industrial Design at E.C.I.A.D, Vancouver. Graham has lived all over the world and his guiltiest sin is air travel (offset of course). He speaks English, French, German and Spanish and is addicted to squash.

After being acquired by a New York publisher in 98, where he first met Graham, Ken held various roles including VP of operations responsible for all deliverables of their internet consulting division and later as divisional CIO introduced process altering technology to their globalization business. Most recently before joining TreeHugger Ken spent time being a full time Dad for his two teenage boys. His interest in the environment dates back to his first summer job leading low impact canoe trips in northern Quebec.

Editor
After traveling throughout America, with a long stopover on Maui, Meaghan O'Neill landed in New York City in 2000, where she began her career in magazine journalism. While working for Interior Design, she became inspired by the tremendous boom that was happening in eco-design and sustainable architecture, which led her to help launch TreeHugger.com in 2004. She has contributed to publications as diverse as Men's Journal and Teen Vogue and her series for Slate.com, "The Slate Green Challenge with TreeHugger" was a finalist for a 2007 National Magazine Award. She is also the co-author of Ready, Set, Green: Eight Weeks to Modern Eco-Living (Villard, 2008), TreeHugger's first book. Michael Graham Richard
Science & Technology and Cars & Transportation Editor
Michael has been with TreeHugger since 2005. He started out as a part-time writer, but after about a year (circa February 2006) he made the transition to full-time editor-in-chief. He played that role until January 2008 (the highlight of this period was of course the acquisition of TreeHugger.com by the Discovery Channel), and he's now editor of the Science & Technology and the Cars & Transportation categories (his two main loves).
Jessica Root
Editorial Assistant
Jessica Root fearlessly leapt into the entertainment business at an early age celebrating her 16th birthday as Production Assistant on the set of The Quality of Light, starring Blythe Danner. Among several other Production Assistant experiences, she held a position as a Location Scout for the Paramount film Stateside.
Jessica deepened her understanding of media studies at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she discovered the power of the media in general, to effect social change. After her internship in Miramax's acquisitions department, her first job upon graduation was at Court TV where she assisted an executive producer.
While pleased with her responsibilities, Jessica found herself passionate about organic living and sustainable design. With media skills under her belt, she brings this passion to her current position as Project Manager here at TreeHugger. In her down time, Jessica enjoys supporting her local farmers at her neighborhood food co-op, yoga, and doing volunteer work for organizations like Food Not Bombs and the International Documentary Association. He really digs modern design, music and pop culture, and believes that they all have a place in our greener world and are a great way to engage a mainstream audience in a greener lifestyle.
For TreeHugger and Planet Green, he most often writes about ideas and products that can help us all be a little greener and live a little better. He believes in human ingenuity and the power of positive thinking, that the democratic process works when everyone engages in it, and that we should all vote with our dollars and our actions. Collin believes everyone can do something every single day to make the world a better place. He can be reached at collin at treehugger dot com.
Lloyd Alter
Writer
Lloyd Alter has been an architect licensed to practice in Ontario, Canada; developer of award-winning condos and townhouses, inventor, and builder of prefab housing with Canada's Royal Homes. He fell into writing for TreeHugger after sending tips from his prefab blog, and discovered that he liked writing a lot more than architecture. He now writes for TreeHugger, is an Associate Professor at Ryerson University teaching sustainable design, and has written for Azure and Ontario Nature magazines. When not at the computer he can be found in his 1989 Hudson single scull or on his bike.
In the course of his previous work developing small residential units and prefabs, Lloyd became convinced that we just use too much of everything- too much space, too much land, too much food, too much fuel, too much money, and that the key to sustainability is to simply use less. And, the key to happily using less is to design things better.
Lloyd is supposed to write about design, but instead writes about just about anything that gets him riled up or excited, which happens a lot.
