Internet Fraud and Web Scams - How to surf the web safely
Use our internet safety tips to protect you and your family from internet scams so that you can make purchases online and surf the web without fear

The internet today is one of the widest reaching forms of media the world has ever seen. Many people feel safe and anonymous when exchanging emails, chatting on-line, purchasing items and doing research.

All scams that have been done via other mediums over the years can be done even easier because of the anonymity of the internet. The con artists will use the chat rooms to tout their product, send unsolicited emails and build web sites to attract you to them. Try to keep aware of these scams and recognize them for what they are. A little caution will go along way.
Email Scams are a top concern

Unsolicited emails are a top complaint among web users. They are annoying and make it hard to go through your email without accidently deleting a real message. There is one important fact you need to know about these email messages: A lot of them are scams. Email scams work very well. That's why there is so much spam. If it didn't work no one would bother sending them.

Some of the more popular email scams are chain letters, bulk email solicitation, credit repair, guaranteed loans, diet scams, vacation giveaways, investment opportunites, online dating scams and cable descrambler kits. These are just a few of the email scams that arrive in mailboxes every day. Responding to unsolicited emails is risky business. Legitimate businesses don't advertise using this tactic.

In essence, Audiosurf is a music visualizer with rhythm/music gameplay. The game's environments are dynamically generated based on any song the player picks from his music library, supporting file types such as cda (music disc), mp3, ogg, wma and songs from iTunes. Most of the levels are futuristic floating worlds, where the song is represented as a race track. With the tag line Ride Your Music, colors are bright, elevation and hills match the game's tempo and synchronize the visuals. Intense actions go downhill at a fast speed or take place in tunnels, while slow build-ups go up slopes. Beats usually lead to small and regular hills. There are many objects along the track that move along the game's rhythm. As a game, it introduces a vehicle on the race track with an overall design similar to the Wipeout games. Players are not able to alter the vehicle's speed, which is controlled by the current song's rhythm, but can move left or right.

Next to freerides with no specific goals game elements, gameplay has been divided into different modes based on three difficulty levels. Players usually have to hit or avoid certain blocks, or use the different colors to build combinations of blocks on a grid. As well as the environment, the series of blocks match the game rhythm and a small sound (from four variations) can be set to go along with the music. The core elements mix the matching system of Guitar Hero with the dynamic gameplay of games such as musika or Phase, even carrying hints of Lumines or Klax.

The music can be chosen from anywhere on the hard drive, but the game also includes a radio where freeware songs can be played. The vehicle on the tracks can be controlled using the mouse of the keyboard, but in the Double Vision mode with two vehicles both have to be used at the same time, or are controlled by two players simultaneously. There are no weapons, but certain modes allow the player to push objects to another column on the grid, hold on to blocks, shuffle them or destroy certain colors. In the modes with multiple colors, there are special blocks with additional points, multipliers and icons that turn all blocks on the grid into a certain color. The player cannot die. Instead, a short respawning phase is shown where no blocks can be hit. There is a tutorial, and a freeride mode where the scenery can be admired without gameplay elements.

Next to points acquired during the race, additional trophies are awarded afterwards based on skill. The tracks are automatically divided into three levels of achievements (bronze, silver and gold) with a set amount of points. Individual rankings are kept for each of the songs, divided over the game modes and difficulty levels. Further filters can limit the lists to the player's country, friends on his list or recent plays. The player can also alter the colours of the different blocks.

Next up in the download queue is Audio Surf, distrubited by valve for the PC.

JUNG
It’s a music adaption game, which builds a track and sets the race speed and theme based on which song you select to race with. Think R-type meets screensaver meets guitar hero meets coloumns. It comes packaged with the orangebox soundtrack as well.

BAJO
There’s nothing like groving out to your own music, and interacting with it at the same time. There’s three difficulty settings and about 11 characters to choose from each with their own abilities, such as picking up blocks and moving them, or jumping over solid blocks.

JUNG
But you can customise the game to suit your play style – so you can just chillax and freeride with some beach music, or go nuts with some techno and really stress yourself out.

BAJO
You get points by lining up colours, and you can play co-op with a friend. You get points by lining up colours, and you can then compare them against local or global leaderboards. It was actually kinda fun to chill out to, but it didn’t really hold my attention for long. I’m giving it 7/10.

JUNG
I thought there could have had a bit more variety in themes and sound effects, but we only have an early build of the game so the final version may have more. I’m giving it a tentative 7.

Audiosurf on Steam includes The Orange Box soundtrack, integrated with the game to enable"Still Alive"surfing and more. In addition, Audiosurf is one of the first titles to leverage the recently announced Steamworks, offering full support for the Steam Achievements that appear on Steam Community profile pages.

While the world of PC gaming may be in "disarray" for those still turning out big beefy blokey shooters, for those who like to take their gaming with just a dash of indie spirit and bedroom coder verve the PC is in pretty good shape. In large part this is down to digital distribution nozzles like Steam, which allow smaller developers to get their games into our grasping paws without the need to jump through the traditional publishing hoops.

So it is for Audiosurf, which made us say nice things when it paraded around in a metaphorical swimsuit at the gamesy beauty pageant we call Independent Games Festival. We only looked at it one month ago, and yet here's the game - ready and waiting to be downloaded by anyone with USD 9.95 (or your local equivalent). So big whoops and kisses for digital distribution, and a cheeky pat on the bottom for Dylan Fitterer, the talented programmer responsible.

As those who've been paying attention will know, Audiosurf is a bit like Rez. And a bit like Amplitude. And a bit like Tetris. And a bit like Vib Ribbon. Yet rather than coming across as a gruesome mash-up of other people's ideas, it cleverly takes the best ideas from each and turns them into something that's both instantly familiar and enjoyably fresh all at the same time.
'Audiosurf' Screenshot 1

Double Vision mode requires one player on the keyboard, one on the mouse. It can be done solo, but only be ambidextrous freaks.

You control a vehicle speeding along an undulating track. There are three lanes, each populated by colour-coded blocks that reach the bottom of the screen in time to the music. Shoulder lanes on either side are free from blocks, allowing you to catch your breath. Superimposed on the track is a grid, seven squares down by three across. Any blocks you hit appear in the grid relative to their location. So if you pick up a red block in the right hand lane, it goes into the right-hand column of the grid. The aim is to match blocks in groups of three, which removes them from the grid and makes room for more. Allow any column to overflow, and the blocks are destroyed leaving you unable to pick up any more for a short time. Confused? Just watch a quick video and it'll become clear.

Leigh disease associated with cytochrome c oxidase deficiency (LD[COX-]) is one of the most common disorders of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, in infancy and childhood. No mutations in any of the genes encoding the COX-protein subunits have been identified in LD(COX-) patients. Using complementation assays based on the fusion of LD(COX-) cell lines with several rodent/human rho0 hybrids, we demonstrated that the COX phenotype was rescued by the presence of a normal human chromosome 9. Linkage analysis restricted the disease locus to the subtelomeric region of chromosome 9q, within the 7-cM interval between markers D9S1847 and D9S1826. Candidate genes within this region include SURF-1, the yeast homologue (SHY-1) of which encodes a mitochondrial protein necessary for the maintenance of COX activity and respiration. Sequence analysis of SURF-1 revealed mutations in numerous DNA samples from LD(COX-) patients, indicating that this gene is responsible for the major complementation group in this important

SOLVED] can only surf one site on 7.10
Hello,
I've installed 7.10 on a brand new computer.
It has an onboard wired lan which i'm using.

I've discoverd that I can only surf to:

http://www.mozilla.com/products/firefox/central.html

and related,

All other sites are stuck at "waiting for".
That indicates, I belive, that the sites are found.
Also each time I enter the name of a site I can see network activity on the system monitor, but just a few on all other sites.

I've looked into the stuff about ipv6 and never it was more dead than on this machine.
Also i've changed my dns, I don't think it's that.

Many thanks,

A broken link will not be given as a prize to the proud solver of this enigma.

Re: can only surf one site on 7.10
To completely rule out DNS problems, have you tried visiting a site by ip address? for example, http://72.14.207.99/ should take you to google.com. You can also test DNS resolution on the command line using the command "resolveip example.com" to see what address your DNS is mapping example.com to.

Re: can only surf one site on 7.10
It's been so long, I'll start again.

Hello,
I can only surf to the Mozila web site.

1)I don't think it's DNS becuase when in terminal, if I write ping www.something... it gives me it's IP very fast.

2)I've tried messing with IPV6 before and it made no diffrance. currently I've Reinstalled Ubuntu, and IPV6 is enabled.

The Firefox "finds" the sites, than hangs on "Waiting for...".
Also I'm having trouble with downloading packages, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I'm surfing throgh a Routher with wires.

It looks much like there's a firewall blocking me. is there a builtin firewall to Ubuntu, and how to stop this?

Also I've tested several other linux distributions (Despite that Ubuntu is my favorite) - all with the same problem.

Safari Town Surf Shop Celebrates 20 Years on the Oregon Coast (PHOTOS)
Tim King Salem-News.com

A "surfer's surf shop", Safari Town understands that focusing on the sport and serving the needs of Oregon surfers has given their shop staying power.
Safari Town Surf Shop
Tony Gile, owner, in front of Safari Town Surf Shop, Lincoln City, Oregon.

Photos: Tony Gile

(LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) - Life can come about full circle sometimes, and I consider that when I think of my longtime friends from the beach, Tony and Jeannie Gile. Their business, Safari Town Surf Shop in Lincoln City is celebrating its 20-year anniversary.

Tony Gile rides an Oregon wave

I am heartened that Oregon so completely accepted the sport of surfing in recent years. I'm not surprised by Tony's success, and I am glad that his shop has been one of the driving forces making surfing a regular everyday part of Oregon's beach culture.

It seems hard to believe that two decades have passed since the time when I lived at the beach and surfed every day and Tony was a friend who would make the trip over from the Salem area. I would joke with him about being from "the valley" and always ask, "Why don't you guys just move out here?"

Last week Tony threw the exact same question to me!

For perspective, let me explain what it was like to surf in Oregon when I first moved here. In 1986 there was one surf shop in Portland, there was one in Seaside and Lincoln City had a windsurfing shop that was transitioning into a surf shop.

I remember days when Tony pushed the limits really hard in his surfing. Bonnie and I were both there in the early 90's when Tony paddled into waves outside Whale Cove, along with Jack Scovel and John Forse, who also owns a surf shop in Lincoln City, for what was almost certainly the first time in history.

Bonnie & Tim King above, Tony & Jeanne,
at a 1991 surf contest held in Lincoln City.

If I recall, the three finally made it back up the rocks with only two boards, one of which was snapped in two.

History

Safari Town Surf Shop began in 1987 in a bedroom in Stayton Oregon. Tony Gile, while at work one day at the Stayton Cannery, had an idea. He got enough guys together to order some wetsuits and started an account with a wetsuit company. Then, he and another old friend named Jack Scovel, created the business.

"One thing led to another, and it wasn't long before people were asking if I could get surf wax, surf leashes, this and that."

Tony discovered that there was an honest demand for a surf shop that catered to real surfers.

But limited cash meant Tony's surf shop was his home and the back of his Toyota pickup.

"Things went on like this for a while, but eventually a small shop was opened in Lincoln City, Oregon in 1989 and Safari Town Surf Shop was born!"

Tony explains that much has happened since then.

In addition to having three wonderful kids, Tony and Jeanne have turned Safari Town Surf Shop into a hands-on family business.

While mastering the art of designing custom surfboards and expanding from one tee shirt rack and no telephone to the danger of overflowing, Tony was shocked at the shop's instant popularity.

Being a surfer himself, Tony understood the importance of staying focused on surfing and serving the needs of Oregon surfers.

Safari Town Surf Shop welcomes everyone of all ages and tastes, and while always keeping surfing as the main emphasis, catching the eye of coastal tourists and renowned surfers alike.

"We are a family owned and operated business and are thankful to God for everything He gives us. We will be celebrating 20 years in business with a huge celebration and sale."

Catch the Wave! If you're a customer from the early days, or if you haven't yet been to Safari Town, their 20th Anniversary is a great time to come check them out at 3026 N.E. HWY 101 Lincoln City, Oregon 541-996-6335.

New Music Monday - Suite for AudioSurf.

Some musicians write music that is intended to be experienced on 2 or 6 speakers. I wrote this suite to be experienced in AudioSurf.

AudioSurf is a videogame that generates race tracks based on music. You point the game to one of your music files, and it creates a playable race track that corresponds to the song. For busier sections, the track tends to slope downwards with more traffic. For calmer sections, the track tends upwards with less traffic.

I wrote the five pieces in this suite to generate specific experiences in AudioSurf. It starts off relatively tame, but by track 4, you will be racing downhill at blistering speeds.

Sunrise is based on Bach's first Prelude. I fill it out with some ambient samples, and the final product is the bumpiest track in the bunch. It switches quickly between uphill and downhill sections.
I call the suite HPF Tide and I wrote it in the 10 days after I first got my hands on AudioSurf. It may be the first time that music has been explicitly written to generate the gameplay in a videogame. Even if it isn't the first, it was a fun, challenging experience that really stretched me as a composer.

It also gives me a rather odd title. I could simply call myself a composer, but I kind of prefer the more unique title 'AudioSurf Level Designer'!

THE HISTORY OF FIRST COAST SURFRIDER:

Planting Seeds
In February of 2000, a group of local surfers started the first effort to form a Surfrider Chapter in Jacksonville. This group realized that continued urban growth and development was having new and potentially negative impacts on the coastal environment, while there was no organized group representing the interest of surfers and beach goers. There was a lot of enthusiasm around these first efforts to start a Surfrider Chapter, however, it lacked a good communications system to galvanize its constituency and build momentum.

Born of a new technology
Two years later, Surfrider Jacksonville found new life by way of a new technology — the Internet. Long time Surfrider and web designer, Jamie Borders had created a highly successful surfing-related website that included a discussion board for surfing and related issues. In January of 2002, Atlantic Beach Pro/Am surfer Julia Skelton-Arnold posted a note on the message board expressing concerns over recently passed Federal regulations that soften wetland protection laws. It was quite a “phenomenon” as a flurry of responses followed announcing their solidarity with Julia’s concerns. This “phenomenon” did not go unnoticed by two members of the original team that attempted to set up a Surfrider Chapter two years prior - clearly, the Internet and fluidgroove.net could provide the springboard needed to build a communications network among the surfing community and make Surfrider Jacksonville a reality.

A ground swell of support
Officially filing papers with Surfrider National in March of 2002 to “organize” a local chapter, we went from five volunteers to over 100 in just three months. This makes Jacksonville one of the fastest growing local chapters in Surfrider’s history. What’s more, Surfrider National, Director of Chapter Operations approved our agenda and chapter plan, without amendment, and went on to say it was the “best” agenda document he had seen from a chapter in his 10 years at Surfrider. Today, we have several environmental and political action projects underway. We continue to grow our membership and expand our efforts to protect the coastal environment.

Three successful local businesses, all already based in Boscombe, have won prestigious and lucrative contracts for retail and catering outlets in Boscombe, as part of the major £10 million regeneration project.

The refurbished Overstrand building will see “Urban Reef” restaurant and café, operated by the owners of boutique Boscombe hotel Urban Beach. “Sorted” will operate a surf shop and separate surf school within the Overstrand. Rob Shearman of Rob’s Event Catering will be bringing “Reefside” catering, newsagents and beach goods to Boscombe Pier entrance, as part of the ongoing seafront refurbishment.

The interiors of Urban Reef, Sorted Surf Shop and Reefside are currently being designed and will all open in April 2009. Building on the success of Boscombe’s regeneration scheme, the new facilities and services will complement the “surf pods” or super beach huts being created in the Overstrand. The Overstrand will also host an RNLI beach lifeguard station, public showers, toilets and changing facilities and events office.

Cllr Beverley Dunlop, Cabinet Member for Economy and Tourism said:

These selections were made at the end of an extensive tender process and each of these companies clearly demonstrated innovative approaches to customer service, facilities, and investment as well as a commitment to developing Boscombe as a quality resort in its own right.

We are delighted that successful local businesses proved to be the best for the job. The opportunities open to these companies are immense and we look forward to their opening next April. It is testament that local businesses have further recognised the potential that Boscombe has and are prepared to invest significantly and play their part in making that happen.

What is Zillow.com?

Zillow.com is an online real estate service dedicated to helping you get an edge in real estate by providing you with valuable tools and information.
In the beginning...

In early 2005, Zillow founders Rich Barton and Lloyd Frink were fresh from the success of bringing travel to the Internet at Expedia.com. While brainstorming ideas for their next business venture, they were drawn to the idea of real estate. Rich had actually started obsessing about bringing real estate online as early as 1989 when his mom decided to become a real estate agent after she packed her last child off to college. He even wrote a plan for a consumer real estate service, but the idea was shelved in favor of the dreaded "steady job." However, his enthusiasm for it never completely disappeared...

Fast forward 15 years. Both Rich and Lloyd were separately involved in buying houses, while jointly looking for new business opportunities. Lloyd spent hours finding information on the house he wanted, putting data into a spreadsheet, and doing complex calculations to determine a home's worth. The idea crossed his mind that someone shouldn't have to be a computer programmer to determine what a house is really worth. He figured he wasn't alone — there must be millions of people struggling with the same problem.

Then the idea struck them: Why not help consumers by giving them access to the same kinds of information and tools agents use? Why not equip consumers with information about what is their most important investment — their home? So Zillow was born, with the goal of helping people make smarter real estate decisions.
Why "Zillow"?

Once they hatched their idea, they needed a name. "Zillow" evolved from the desire to make zillions of data points for homes accessible to everyone. But a home is about more than data - it is where you lay your head to rest at night, like a pillow. Thus, "Zillow" was born. They knew they had a winning name when employees began talking in Z-language and newly-minted words starting with "Z" popped up everywhere (e.g., Zestimate®, Zindex®).

irthdays and other special holidays are known for arriving during a time when one has very little extra cash to spend! Therefore, a shopper must be smart and know how to use the Internet to the fullest to get a great deal on a quality present. So what do Internet bargain shoppers know that others don’t? They know how to research! Here are some tips on getting the best deals!

First, get a pencil and a notepad ready to mark down any deals you may find during your search and where you found them. It is very easy to lose track of how much something costs and where you found it. When you type in the keyword for the item you are in search of in the main search engines add other words like “+ free shipping” and other specific keywords that will help you find what you need faster. You can add pricing information, buy one get one free, and other keywords that are usually associated with the product you have in mind.

Second, think of programs you already belong and check for discounts/coupons on their sites first. When you shop sometimes you are asked if you would like to join a special program hosted by the store. You accept and when it’s time to shop for that special gift, you forget about your memberships. One of the first things you should do is check those sites for specials discounts on the items you are seeking. Once you see some of the sales, you may change the item you had in mind to buy, for one similar that could be less expensive.

Third, check online auction sites and Amazon. There are many small businesses selling items dollars cheaper than the bigger stores. If you don’t mind, shopping with private sellers, try one of their sites.

Fourth, visit popular sites known for their deep discounts. Some of the most widely known names tend to have good quality merchandise at affordable prices. Stores like Walmart, Kmart, JcPenny, and Sears just to name a few. When you visit these sites type “clearance” in the search to see what items have been marked down.

Fifth, check local store websites. You may have stores right in your hometown you haven’t thought about and didn’t bother to check their websites either. Sometimes you will find that the store has a better deal online then if you walked into the store. If this is the case, you can print the item out from the Internet and if it is in the store, you most likely will get it for the same price you saw on the Internet.

Sixth, visit comparison shopping sites. Some of these sites will provide you with a variety of store locations for the single item you choose. This is a simple way to see who has the best price for what you are looking for. However, don’t solely rely on these sites, because it is impossible to list every single store in their databases that have the best deal.

Seventh, there are specialty shops that have discounts on shipping and handling or offer free shipping like the larger stores if you spend a certain amount of money. Sometimes they will offer some unbelievable deals because they aren’t as popular as the others. These companies use these special promotions to get people to visit their websites and make a purchase.

After you have done all seven of these things, you should have a good idea of what you are willing to spend, whether or not you will have to pay for shipping, and if you might want to be included on their mailing list in the future. Be sure that the website that you choose has an excellent return policy, has a phone number and email you can contact, and doesn’t have any other programs they may happen to sign you up for when you give them your credit card information. If you notice, many popup windows offering you to make other purchases be careful because some of those offers could be the kind that keep taking monthly from your credit card or bank. If you are unsure about any site, place a phone order.

Surf School (Unrated) DVD Review
This Mahi-mahi stinks to high heaven.
by Hock Teh

August 13, 2007 - It never ceases to amaze how ridiculously bad scripts get the green light from movie studios, let alone are distributed and released to theaters even after realizing how bad the final product turned out to be. Like most consumer products, shouldn't there be some kind of rigid quality control when it comes to movies too? You know, appoint a powerful gatekeeper who is able to say, "This movie stinks! Can it right away and let's move on." From a business standpoint, that might not be as feasible or as easy as you might think because by the time the movie gets into post-production, the studio has already invested a pretty penny in the project and recouping some of that money--however little--becomes a priority. And studios know that there is serious money to be made in the home video market. Sometimes, a movie can make as much or even more in DVD sales when compared to its often-lackluster box office take.

This is the reason why Lions Gate Entertainment has chosen to unleash the turd that is Surf School onto the shelves of your local Blockbuster. After a very limited and very brief theatrical run last year, the plug was mercifully pulled on Surf School, effectively saving the human race from further indignity and disgrace. Now that it is back in circulation for rental and purchase, well, all bets are off! Typical of almost every teen-oriented comedy, Surf School is constructed from all possible known clichés from that well-trodden genre. From a classic like Animal House to American Pie to the fifty recent iterations of National Lampoon, one would think that there are more than enough material to either steal or stay away from. It's just too bad that writer and director, Joel Silverman chose to pilfer the least desirable story elements and the least funny gags for his movie. Even the movie's tagline, "This summer get wet!" has absolutely no intelligible reference to the plot whatsoever.

Jordan (Corey Sevier) has just arrived at Laguna Beach High School to complete his senior year. Hailing from the East Coast, Jordan knows as much about surfing--the manly sport of choice at Laguna High--as he does brain food. As the new kid on the block, Jordan gets ragged on by the school's resident bully and all round jerk, Tyler (Ryan Carnes). Taking the mantra, "safety in numbers" to heart, Jordan begins to hang out with the school's other rejects. Here's where the high school character clichés step in. You have Doris (Laura Bell Bundy), the resident Goth girl, Mo (Sisq¿), the token black guy, Larry (Lee Norris) the nerdy virgin, Taz (Miko Hughes), the punk who is all talk and no substance and Chika (Eriko Tamura), a Japanese exchange student with surprises under her kimono.

Well, senior year also means it is time for the senior trip. This year, it is to Costa Rica for the, get this, International High School Surfing Championship. Well, our rejects are not invited but they decide to go anyway, arriving one week early to attend surf school and take part in the competition. There, they hook up with surf school owner Rip (Harland Williams), a washed-out ex-surfer who spends more time chugging down alcoholic beverages and passed out under the coconut tree than in the water surfing. Rip sobers up long enough to first espouse his philosophy about the Mahi-mahi and then to give our misfits a few pointers that seem to be enough for them to compete against their archrival, Tyler. I guess these guys are born surfers. Hang ten, dude!

Everyone and their mother knows that sex sells and Surf School serves up plenty of that but not always in a manner that we would like to see. Apart from the usual gaggle of bikini-clad babes, you have your parade of overweight women and also hints of bestiality that involves a cross-dressing chimpanzee. Yuck! About the only redeeming feature in this movie is the presence of the three gorgeous and uninhibited Swedish girls, Helga (Annika Svedman), Belga (Aubrie Lemon) and Selga (Rikke Juhll Moegelhoej).

It's bad enough that the story is unbelievably shallow and wholly predictable, the extremely bad acting knocks this movie down a few extras notches. The biggest culprit is Harland Williams, whose annoying over-the-top rendition of Rip simply proves that less is sometimes better. That same point, coincidentally, could also be used to describe the movie itself. Just substitute less with none.

Who can benefit from Massage and Aromatherapy?

Guess what?? Massage therapy can be beneficial to everyone, from infants to the elderly. You don't have to be suffering from stress or injury to reap the benefits of massage and aromatherapy. Both massage and aromatherapy, together and alone, are highly effective preventative maintenance for the entire body, mind, and spirit.
What are the benefits of Massage and Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy

First of all, Massage and Aromatherapy can be used synergistically or separately to relax or stimulate the body. Aromatherapy involves the application or inhalation of certain natural essential oils. When using aromatherapy in conjunction with massage therapy, an essential oil such as lavender is mixed with a natural massage oil such as coconut oil and is applied to the skin for an added therapeutic effect. Lavender can help induce relaxation and achieve balance. Peppermint can be massaged into the temples to help alleviate headaches. Eucalyptus is an example of an essential oil that is added to steamed distilled water and inhaled into the lungs to help relieve sinus congestion.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy stimulates circulation and promotes healthy nutrition, repair, and lymphatic drainage of the soft tissue. The effect of massage can help alleviate chronic and acute pain allowing the body to move freely and without restriction. Massage therapy also stimulates the release of endorphines, which are "feel good" hormones and decrease the hormones such as cortisol that create stress.
Massage Therapy involves a variety of techniques that help with the body's overall maintenance:

• Swedish Massage involves a basic application of techniques that can be integrated with other modalities such as aromatherapy, myofacial release, trigger point release, passive stretching, and lymph drainage techniques. Swedish Massage can be either stimulating or relaxing, depending on the individual's needs.

• Trigger Point Release Therapy can be rather painful, but within the individual's tolerance, but it is necessary depending on the degree of the trigger point. A trigger point is a hyperirritable nodule, or "knot" in the muscle tissue that may cause a painful or numbing sensation in the muscle or any area that nerve supplies.

• Myofacial release helps gently break apart the connective tissue (fascia) that cross bind and form adhesions surrounding the muscle. If the fascia is not released prior to the massage treatment, than the muscle is unable to move without restriction.

Some of the more common conditions massage therapy is used to treat and prevent are:

• sports injuries
• whiplash
• chronic pain
• tendonitis
• carpal tunnel sydrome
• arthritis
• stress related symptoms (ie: tension headaches)
• postural imbalances

A national review of Surfing Australia’s surf school network, which last year delivered more than 150,000 surfing lessons, will be conducted by a sport management research team from Southern Cross University

The network, comprising 74 surf schools affiliated with Surfing Australia, also delivers the Safe Surfing Program.

“The surf school Industry in Australia has probably quadrupled in size over the past decade. We (Surfing Australia) need to examine our approach and the role we play in this area, as it is such a key component in the development pathway for our sport,” said Surfing Australia chief executive officer Mr Mark Lane.

“This review is part of a process aimed at strengthening the network and ensuring that it maintains its high standards of safety and quality surf lesson delivery.”

The surf school network was born out of the need to establish standards for the operation and delivery of surfing lessons on Australian beaches.

It boasts an exemplary safety record with no major injury or accident reported since its establishment in 1990.

Mr Jak Carroll, the co-ordinator of Southern Cross University’s Diploma of Sport Management (Surfing Studies), will lead the review team which also includes Dr David Arthur and Mr Ray Booker from the Department of Exercise Science and Sport Management.

“With their expertise in sport management and their knowledge of the surfing industry, we feel that Southern Cross University is well-placed to provide an independent evaluation of the network,” Mr Lane said.

The review team will be conducting surf school forums around Australia in August and September prior to making formal recommendations to Surfing Australia in November.

Photo opportunity: Mark Lane and Jak Carroll will be available for interview at Surfing Australia’s Casuarina headquarters, Barclay Drive, Casuarina Beach, on Wednesday (August 8) between 9.30am and 10.30am. A surf coaching lesson will also be taking place at the nearby beach.

Southern Cross University Sydney Hotel School student Sally Potocki always knew she wanted to be a champion basketball player.

The talented 20-year-old Women’s National Basketball League and Sydney Flames player has just been selected for the 2009 Australian University Sport women’s basketball team. She is flying to Belgrade in Serbia this week to compete in the World University Summer Games – the Summer Universiade Belgrade 2009.

Sally, who is studying for her Bachelor of Business in Hotel Management, also works part-time at front desk reception at The Westin, Sydney. Not only that, but she somehow also manages to squeeze in training for European handball – a game she describes as a cross between soccer and basketball.

“Mum played the game as a girl in Poland and introduced me to it. She still plays it and we often go to training together. She is a great support,” Sally said.

“I was in Serbia last year competing in the Junior World European Handball Championships and had great fun. The game uses many similar skills to those used in basketball, only you also get to use your feet to save a goal.

“I started playing basketball around the age of seven and I just loved it. My passion for the sport grew from there.

“I can spend ridiculous amounts of time practising. Usually I do eight or nine training sessions a week – a combination of working out with weights, doing an individual fitness program or playing with the whole Sydney Flames team.

“I learnt in high school how to manage my time really well between study, work and sport, so I don’t find it too hard to fit everything in – but there is certainly no room for anything else, especially not a relationship.

“It’s just as well I love the sport so much. I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.

“When I eventually need to retire from the sport I will need a new career path and that is why I am studying at The Hotel School. I love the travel industry and working with people. One day I want to manage my own hotel.

“The course has delivered everything I ever wanted and the support and flexibility shown to me has been outstanding.”

The Summer Universiade is one of the world’s largest multi-sport events and is often compared to the Olympics in size and scope.

Athletes at previous Universiades have produced world and Olympic records. The event is held every odd year and attracts over 10,000 participants from 170 countries.

More than 200 athletes named in the 2008 Australian Olympic team were current or former university students and many of those same athletes had participated in previous Universiade events.

Increasingly, national sporting organisations are viewing Universiades as an integral part of the elite athlete developmental pathway.

Sally will depart with the Australian team on Wednesday for the three-week event.

Starting in January 2003, Morro Negrito Surfcamp will be adding a surf school. Nick Davie from England will be the instructor at the camp. He has worked professionally at a school in the Canary Islands and will be coming to Morro Negrito to conduct the classes.

By way of explanation, this will not increase the numbers of surfers at the camp, usually around 15, but never over 20. The beginners will surf the sandy beach break and as their surfing ability increases, they will be able to surf the Sandbar break (wave size permitting). The other breaks of Silva and the Point are not recommended for beginners.

For pictures of waves in January, go to: panamasurfcamp.com.

For some recent video clips of some of the breaks at the camp, go to: morronegrito.com.

ELCOME TO THE ONLY ROXY SURF RETREAT IN COSTA RICA

PLAYA HERMOSA, COSTA RICA February 8, 2007 -- Longtime Roxy team rider and Costa Rica's 1999 National Women's Surf Champion Andrea Diaz has been granted the rights for her Waves Costa Rica Surf School to become a Roxy/Quiksilver surf instruction facility. Now called Roxy Costa Rica surf Retreat, it will be located, for now, on the same campus of Diaz' Waves Costa Rica Surf Camp in Playa Hermosa, the Mecca of Costa Rica Surf, just south of Jaco on the Central Pacific.

The original Waves Costa Rica was founded by Diaz 3 years ago, to provide hands-on coaching and skilled instruction for those who want to learn to surf, having a good time in the waves, or for those who want to take their surfing to the next level. One of only three Ticas who seven years ago launched professional surfing for women in Costa Rica's all male field, Diaz joined forces a host of top riders and coaches to deliver some of the most comprehensive skills, rides and surf school/camps/retreats in Latin America. These professionals are all either accredited by the International Surfing Association (ISA) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) with open water lifeguard, CPR, first aid, life-saving and water rescue certification, and have education in nutrition, physical education and more. Students use Banzaii Surfboards and Banana Wax, the two sponsors of Roxy Waves Costa Rica.

Diaz philosophy is based on her own personal experiences, and the understanding of what her students are feeling. "I was not a natural-born surfer; I had to make myself into a surfer. In doing so, I set myself onto one of the best rides of my life, one that changed all that I was, and made me all that I am," she instructs.

Throughout that journey, Diaz had Roxy/Quiksilver-the leader in women's surfing and the board riding lifestyle-at her side. It was Roxy's Danielle Beck who discovered her early on, and supported every move she made with contest inscriptions, magazine photo shoots, trips to exotic locations, clothes and the like. Andrea was a Roxy Girl when she became the first and only Costa Rican National Women's Champion, graced the cover of SURFOS (largest Latin American surf magazine), on ESPN, in Surfing Girl magazine, Surf Life for Women magazine, and the grand fashion magazine, W and a member of the Costa Rica National Surf Team, for the 2004 ISA World Surfing Games, where her surfing skills helped the team place 9th around the globe.

After becoming the mother of two beautiful girls-Lia and Sol-Diaz's, Waves Costa Rica flourished as the premier surf school in the country for boys, men, women and girls. However, it was the female surfer who she felt needed her attention the most.

After years of fighting for Costa Rica's Women's surf contest rights, and opening the door for future generations of young ladies to ride through, now became the time for her to forget the job she was doing in contests and to focus on her instruction.

Roxy agreed and the Roxy Waves Costa Rica Retreat was born.

"I take it so personal, "Andrea explains. "Roxy/Quiksilver has been so great to me and they are a great company that represents quality surfing. I have tons to give in and out of the water. That is why we are doing what we are doing now with the Roxy Waves Costa Rica Surf Retreat, which is about giving back to girls who want to get the best surf instruction, learn ocean safety, have the most qualified teachers, have the Costa Rican experience with native Costa Ricans, and have the blessing of the best surf company in the world."

SURF LESSONS
The surf lessons are 2 hours per session. They include surfboard rental, rash guard, fruit, water, hotel transportation. Learn to surf with qualified instructors who themselves are expert surfers and trained with life saving skills. Learn basic ocean knowledge - how to read the waves, the tide, the swell and the wind. Learn the fundamentals such as paddling methods, how to "duck dive," and how to get to your feet.

SURF GUIDES
At Roxy Waves Costa Rica, we also cater to the intermediate and advanced surfer. Why go through the headache of renting a car and trying to figure out the Spanish on the signs (if you can find a sign!) to the surf spots? Why stress trying to guess the correct swell direction to or where are the locations of the best breaks? Why do that when you can hire a Roxy Waves Costa Rica Pro Surf Guide to optimize your surf time and have a hassle-free stay?

You can contact them at askroxy@wavescr.com
