The University of California, Santa Cruz campus was opened in 1965 and has a population of 10,117 (1996).

About 10% of the land area of the County is devoted to State Parks, several of which are within or adjacent to the City limits. The climate is mild. The average high temperature is 69 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low temperature is 44 degrees Fahrenheit. Rainfall averages 32 inches per year.The Santa Cruz beach and wharf are one and a half mile from property. Ride the Giant Dipper roller coaster, a national landmark. Try surfing, kayaking or sailing.
Take a short walk along beautiful West Cliff Drive, and witness some of the world's best surf waves.
Ride the historic Big Trees Railroad from Santa Cruz through the redwood forest up to Roaring Camp. Observe the majesty of the redwoods on a short loop trail through Henry Cowell State Park.
From the lighthouse or wharf, view sea lions, otters and an occasional whale.
Witness the Monarch butterfly migration at Natural Bridges State Park or drive a short way north on scenic Highway 1 to see the elephant seal migration at Ano Nuevo Park.
