Pacific Shoreline Marathon Runs With Surf City USA®
Huntington Beach, CA May 18, 2007
After eleven years as the Pacific Shoreline Marathon, race
organizers announced today the title of the event has been changed to the Surf City USA®
Marathon. The next event date is February 3rd, 2008 and registration is set to open on May 19th.
While the popular oceanfront race course will still run along the spectacular pacific shoreline, race
organizers and runners agree that the Surf City image better defines the unique feel of the event.
“This event has always been characterized by the laid back, unique surf culture of Huntington Beach
and Southern California,” said Amy Tomchak, the event’s Executive Director. “The Surf City USA®
brand adds to this allure.”
“After more than a decade in our community, we’re thrilled that the Marathon has incorporated the
Surf City USA® brand name into its title,” said Doug Traub, President of the Huntington Beach
Conference and Visitors Bureau. ”The Marathon is a perfect example of the Southern California
beach lifestyle. Through this partnership we can work even more closely together to increase the
world class stature of our destination and this event.”
“This outstanding sporting event attracts thousands of people to Huntington Beach from all over the
country,” said Huntington Beach Mayor Gil Coerper. “It is important to our city and our community
that Surf City USA® is home to one of the greatest marathons on the west coast, and we believe
promoting this new name is that extra appeal that puts us over the top.”
The race starts to a soundtrack of the Beach Boys, is led by lifeguard vehicles and classic woody
surf sedans, and runners are serenaded by surf rock riff music as they make their way through the
scenic race course. The start line is on Pacific Coast Highway 101, runs past the famous Huntington
Beach pier, and makes its way down on to a multipurpose running path right on the sand in the heart
of Huntington Beach. With the encouragement of local surfers cheering participants along the way,
runners find the atmosphere unique and inspiring. All finishers receive a classic surfboard shaped
medal.
The event has sold out in advance for the last two years and is expected to sell out even earlier by
drawing more runners from other parts of the country who want a taste of Southern California.
