Surf breaks
From the harbour near the airport the surf points of Nth and Sth Male Atolls are very close. 30 minutes to the north, Jailbreaks, Honkys and Sultans and another 30 minutes on to Cokes and Chickens. These are the most popular points of Nth Male. South Male Atoll surfing points are about the same travelling time to the south.
The surf points are all quality breaks over coral reef. They all hold surf up to 8 ft and range in length from 100 mtr to 250 mtr rides. The wind during the surfing season, which is from May to October, is consistently from the west and the swell is always between 2 ft and 8 ft. The best conditions are with a Sth East swell and a light west wind.
During the day cruising between surf points is no problem. The captains endeavour to anchor close to the surf points for guests to view the surf when not in the water. All the surf points break on the reefs which surround the islands. Due to the close proximity of the islands it is always possible to go ashore at anytime. At 5.30 pm the safari boat is shifted from it’s anchor in the channel to the nearby harbour. These harbour anchorages are only 5 minutes away from the channel anchorage. Every morning at 6 am the boat is shifted back to the channel close to surf points. All of the channel passes have two surfing points, a left on one side of the channel and a right on the other. The channels are about 4-500 mtrs wide.
All safaris are totally flexible. The crew and guides are there to go when and where you would like within North and South Male. The boat can also move to other atolls such as the Central or Southern (Outer) Atolls if guest are happy to pay a nominal fuel surcharge.
North & South Male Atolls
Chickens -Eastern reef of North Male Atoll, this long, excellent left-hander that has two sections with an enjoyable thin peeling racing lip. Best winds are NW-NNE (offshore). It was named because of the poultry farm on the island and is only accessed by boat.
Cokes – Also at the eastern reef of North Male Atoll, this wave is a short but intense ride, that is perfect for barrels a steep barrelling takeoff, then a very shallow inside section that opens up even more than the takeoff. Ideal on a straight south swell and winds NW. Named after the Coca-Cola factory on the island, beautiful view of palm fringed beach from the surf zone with access by boat only.
Lohis – Right out the front of Hudhuran Fushi Island Resort on the eastern reef of North Male Atoll - Good and hollow left-hander with two sections. Need big SE swells and high tides to work well. Best during NW-NE offshore wind
Piddlies/Ninjas - North Male Atoll break out the front of Kanifinolhu Resort this slow right-hander is good for beginners and long-boarders. Best on W-NW winds with a moderate S swell. It was named Ninjas due to the Japanese riders that love the break.
Honkey's - One of the most consistent waves of North Male Atoll off the island of Thamburudhoo which is Uninhabited. This is an excellent, long, world-class right-hander. The take-off is a steep outside peak called 'Phantoms', which slingshots into a very long, walled, super fast section called the 'Pinnacles’. Rides are 100 to 150 metres it is best on high tide with any wind from W to N and is only accessed by boat.
Tomb Stones – Also of the island of Thamburudhoo and adjacent to 'Sultans' on the eastern Reef of North Male Atoll. This long, left-hander starts small and increases in size and intensity as it wraps 90 degrees around the island. A six feet wave on the take-off will end up at least eight feet on the end section, called 'Fred's Ledge'. Best winds, ENE-N as this is the only wave that works on a ENE wind.
Twin Peaks - Iyaru Faru which is near the inhabited island of Gulhi on the eastern Reef of South Male Atoll. This great left picks up more swell than most of the breaks in South Malé Atoll. Best in North winds, the higher the tide, the better and is only accessed by boat.
Quarters - Gulhigaathuhuraa, uninhabited island attached to Palm Tree Island Resort. Eastern Reef of South Male Atoll - Really nice, fast little right-hander that picks up less swell than most other places. It is best in winds W to NW and is named after the resort workers' quarters on the island.
Kates – Boduhuraa is near the Palm Tree Island Resort on the eastern Reef of South Male Atoll. This small short left is best in winds NW to N.
Riptides – This small reef in the middle of the channel on the southern side of the island is a fast right-hander and one of the best waves in the area. The area is subject to strong currents and is best on W to SW winds.
