Warm water, great waves, easy access and excellent prices are some of the characteristics that make Costa Rica a surfing paradise.

There are many surf destinations in Costa Rica in the different regions:

Northern Pacific Coast

- Tamarindo: the best located Costa Rica surf point in the Northern Pacific coast for its great location and comfortable hotels. In Tamarindo there are waves throughout the entire beach but especially in its river mouth. What makes Tamarindo such a great surfing destination is its close acces to the best surf points in the south and north of Costa Rica, like Playa Negra (south) and Witches Rock (north). Also Tamarindo is known for its great restaurants and night life. Tamarino is acceses by paved road all the way from San Jose, about 4 and half hours or by shuttle plane.
- Mal Pais / Santa Teresa: Mal Pais is located in the Southern tip of Nicoya. It has become one of the best Costa Rica surfing destinations for its great and consistent waves all year long in its golden beaches. Its amazing flora and fauna and its peaceful environment make it a place you should never miss.

- Playa Grande
- Witches Rock
- Olis Point
- Avellanas
- Nosara
- Playa Negra

Central Pacific Coast

- Hermosa: It is the most consistent Costa Rica surfing point throughout all the year and has become very popular by all surfers. It has about 3 miles of steep beach with breaking points all over the area so everyone can surf wherever they want. Waves in Hermosa are bigger and stronger than the ones in Jaco so its recommended for more advanced surfers.
- Jaco: It is the closest surfing point from San Jose (2 hours by car). It has become the most popular surf point for its good waves, easy acces, lots of accessible hotels and great nightlife. Its a great point to learn to surf.
- Esterillos
- Escondida
- Manual Antonio: It is a beautiful town located at 1 hour from Jaco which offers good waves mostly for beginners. What is great about Manuel Antonio is its great ocean views, incredible beaches and its great variety of flora and fauna. If you want more serious surfing you can go to Playa Hermosa that is 45 min. away from Manuel Antonio by car.
- Dominical: It is a great surfing point for more advanced surfers who like to surf in a more relaxed environment and with fewer crowds than Hermosa.

Southern Coast

- Mata Palo: It is a surfing destiny for those who like the virgin green areas and appreciate the flora and fauna. The waves are really good but are not very consistent, so you have to check for the swell. As it is a very virgin area the power is provided by solar energy and the hotels include all meals since there are no restaurants and shops in the area.
- Backwash
- Pan Dulce
- Pavones

Carribean Coast

- Puerto Viejo: There are different surfing points in the area from intermediate to advanced level. There is a beach break in Punta Cocles for those surfers who are in a lower level and want to have a good time. For those pro surfers you can go to Salsa Brava which is a reef braking wave which has the reputation of being the stronger wave in Costa Rica.
- Isla Uvita
