“Break a leg!” “F#*k you, brah!” Those words could only mean one thing; the 2007 Quiksilver Surf Shop Challenge Hawaii Regional was under way. Apparently Casey Brown wasn’t familiar with the words of good luck offered to him by fellow competitor Roy Powers, but the friendly banter was just one of the attractions that kept the audience entertained at Kewalo Basin on a rather tame Friday the 13th.

The 2007 Southwest Qualifier for the Quiksilver Surf Shop Challenge presented by SURFER Magazine went down on Friday, June 8 at Newport’s 54th Street. The event was marked by small, 2-foot, ledgey waves, onshore winds, and a water color that can only be described as lovely shades of red and brown.

The crowd chanted “ten…nine…eight” as the last surfer paddled toward the finish line at a sprint pace. A rubber-coated foot hit the sand as the rhythmic chant reached three, and by one he dove through the air.
