Marine Mammal Surf Festival 2008
On July 26 & 27 Nor-Cal Surf Shop will host the First Marine Mammal Surf Festival to raise awareness of the mass slaughtering of dolphins and whales in Japan, Norway and Iceland. All money raised will be given back to Dave Rastovich’s non-profit organization Surfers for Cetaceans.

We are offering each shop/company the opportunity to be represented in this event by sending 4+ competitors (plus alternets to sub in at any time) to vie for the trophy. Custom hand made by Kevin Ancell (google him). Onbehalf of the winning team the main pot of $$ entries is donated to Dave Rastovich's SFC organization and the winning team brings home the trophy to display for one year... untill the next team challenge MMSF#2 at which the team will bring the trophy back and rechallenge all the teams entered (like the Stanley cup). We are asking for $400.00 dollars per team ($100.00 per rider) entry for the unique chance to give back to what we all love by saving dolphins and whales from cruel slaughter in their own habitat.

Sponsors/Vendors/Suppliers... We are asking for your full support, (a great chance to give back to our surfing enviorment/our industry which we all love and is our life) PORDUCTS FOR RAFFLE/PRIZES, DONATIONS, GIVE-A-WAYS.... ETC. All proceeds are donated to Rasta's organization SFC (Surfer's for Cetaceans). We are working hard to make this a successful event that will carry on for years to come. Press Release Tuesday, July 29, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Pacifica, California, July 29th 2008 – NorCal
Surf shop and a host of supporting sponsors including, Xcel Wetsuits,
Global Surf Industries, Surf Addict and Patagonia have successfully
completed the 1st Annual Marine Mammal Surf Festival and Contest. The
event was held at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica to a crowd of at least

five hundred spectators, volunteers and competitors.

Under a beautiful sun drenched day it was all Aloha at this charity
event. Over 100 participants ranging in ages from seven to seventy
volunteered and competed and helped to raise awareness of bloody
whaling and dolphin hunts, and the capture, pollution, acoustic
invasion, habitat destruction and food depletion of these majestic
ocean creatures.

Surfers competed all day long for the bragging rights to winning the
first annual event. Contest categories included a Men’s Open Longboard
division, Women’s Open Longboard, Groms (8 – 14) and what has now been
dubbed the P – Town Double Down where rival teams compete to take the
team trophy, designed by world class artist, Kevin Ancell back to
their respective camps. And in good fun they featured the “Extreme
Losers Final” where the winner took home an X-Large Pizza provided by
Extreme Pizza. This year’s team winners residing mostly in the Half
Moon Bay Area flying the flag of Team Powerlines.

“The people at NorCal Surf shop are supportive of the surf community
and this is a great cause”. “To be a part of this contest was an honor
for our team and our town”, said Curt Myers, founder of Powerlines
Productions and Team Manager.

Both winners and losers were treated to a great breakfast and lunch
donated by Pacifica’s Gorilla barbecue. Festival tents hosted Surf
products, artwork, environmental awareness, bands and booths featuring
yoga and massage.

Bob Leonelli a lifetime surfer and MMSF founder got the idea to hold
the event after following the exploits of Dave Rastovich, a
professional surfer and founder of Surfers for Cetaceans.

“As a surfer I feel we are the true stewards of the sea. And if we
won’t stand up for these beautiful creatures then who will?” said
Leonelli. “What better way to bring awareness to the situation by
holding an event at the edge of their own habitat”.

Surfers for Cetaceans (S4C) is a voice for the international community
of surfers, all of whom, without exception, are the friend of whales
and dolphins and who, in a shared love of the ocean, see cetaceans as
family - as next of kin.

S4C therefore is opposed to killing or mistreatment of whales and
dolphins and calls on all those involved in such to turn away from
creating such unnecessary suffering and instead to cherish and
celebrate Whale Nation by protecting cetaceans, their home seas and their migrations.

Leonelli approached Shawn Rhodes, Mavericks Big Wave Surfer and Co
owner of NorCal Surf shop with the idea of holding an event. Rhodes
his partner Greg Savin and the Norcal crew already successfully host
one of the North Coast biggest and longest running surf events, The
Uncle Dicks Surf Fest every November. Shawn and Savin agreed with
Leoneli and committed the NorCal Crew and all of its resources
including master event coordinator and shop Manager Jeremiah Johnson.
Together with the generous help from a lot of supporting sponsors
Johnson and his crew put together a great event and managed to raise
some much needed funds to further the cause.

“The support from the local community both surfers and non-surfers
alike was amazing”, said Johnson. “A lot of great sponsors donated
some amazing product that helped raise a lot of money.”

With a successful 1st event under their belts, contest organizers committed to making this an annual event.

“With the success of our first event we hope to land a major sponsor next year that can help us grow this event year after year,” said Johnson.

At the awards ceremony and after party held at NorCal Surf shop, Shawn Rhodes thanked all involved and pointed out that mid-day during the event two grey whales were spotted just outside Pedro Point. “See they’re watching”, said Rhodes.

Next Event Scheduled -November 22nd - which will have a day component - paddle out with whale/dolphins prayer/vows by Dave Rastovich - and an evening component - reception/silent & live auction, along with the movie premiere for "MINDS IN THE WATER," movie by Dave Rastovich, Justin Krumb (movie producer) and Steve Bartilotti (editor Surfer Magazine), which will be attended by many celebs. artists, musicians & Rasta himself. - "LIQUID NATION" style.
