Prize money for the top categories is more than it's ever been for this competition or any other in the Pacific Northwest thanks to one of the event's sponsors, said Rip Curl Canada national sales and marketing manager Drew Hawkshaw. The winner in the men's pro division will get $5,000 and the top woman will get $2,000. Other winners will receive cash and prizes.
Last year's winners of the men's pro and the women's division were Pete Devries and Dominga Bonnemaison.
Heats will be 20 minutes long and a contestant's best two rides/waves will count towards a total heat score. In a press release, Rip Curl said younger divisions will be allowed a "second chance," guaranteeing contestants surf more than once in the event.
Association of Surfing Professionals champion Tom Curren will be on hand for the competition this year, after attending events in Vancouver and Victoria leading up the Tofino comp.
Curren, who is now a musician, is also headlining the party being held at the Tofino Legion Sat. May 23. Playing with him are DJ Mat the Alien, Vince Vaccaro, and DJ Vinyl Ritchie.
Pre-registration for the contest can be done locally at Long Beach Surf Shop in Tofino. The cut-off is 5 p.m., Thu., May 21.
Look for a prize give-aways, a mini ramp demonstration, as well as surf and skim board demos on the beach.
