MISSION STREET UNDERGROUND UTILITY DISTRICT
DECONSTRUCTION CEREMONY
The City of Santa Cruz, PG&E, AT&T and Comcast, in cooperation with Caltrans, have
completed the construction of the Mission Street Underground Utility District, Phases 1
and 2. Thank you for your patience and perseverance during this challenging project.
Please join your local representatives on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 10AM as the last
project utility pole is removed. The Deconstruction Ceremony will take place at the
intersection of Mission Street (Hwy 1) and Union Street.
The project construction was completed by Lewis & Tibbitts Inc., of San Jose, California,
designed by Mark Thomas and Associates of San Jose, California and managed by City
Public Works and Redevelopment Agency staff.
This $5.8 million project was primarily funded with a combination of utility company
funds via rate payer contributions and the City of Santa Cruz Economic and
Redevelopment Agency. The project was combined with 2 federal grants to install
decorative street lights and street trees on the corridor.
Other project statistics include:
 35,000 feet of utility trench.
 400,000 feet (76 miles) of conduit & wire. (distance between Santa Cruz and
San Francisco).
 150 decorative street lights installed.
 100 street trees planted.
 8,000 feet (1.5 miles) of utilities undergrounded.
 280 utility boxes installed.
 24 above ground facilities installed.
 250 wooden utility poles removed.
