Cycling along the surf
Would you like to explore the coastline the sporty way? Rent a bike and cycle the North Sea route or the Wadden Sea route. Both routes follow the coastline. You will enjoy both the coastal area and the hinterland. Two long-distance cycle routes have been mapped out along the coastline of Holland. The routes are sign-posted. Look out for the rectangular signs with green wording and the letters LF.
North Sea Route
Route LF1 is the North Sea route. It runs all the way from Den Helder and Boulogne-sur-Mer in France. The part in Holland is nearly 300 kilometres long. It is great for a short cycling holiday. Tail winds are most likely if you cycle in the northern direction. Follow the LF1b signs. Places of interest include Breskens, the port of Flushing, the beautiful monumental city of Middelburg and the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier in Zeeland. The coast of the provinces of North and South Holland has lovely dune areas. Scheveningen and other pleasant seaside resorts will also make you want to stop.
Wadden Sea route
Would you like to explore the Wadden Islands by bike? Opt for the LF10 Wadden Sea route. This runs between Callantsoog on the North Sea coast and Nieuweschans on the German border. This route goes past all harbours from which ferries leave for the Wadden Islands. You can visit any Wadden Island you like. Island hopping is a possibility too. You can, for instance, go from Den Helder via the islands of Texel and Vlieland to Harlingen.
Your own route
If the route is too long, you can cycle only a part. You can start and end at any point of the route. It goes without saying that you can deviate from the route, for instance to visit an attraction.
Maps
Even though the routes are sign-posted, we advise you to buy a good map. Especially if you wish to deviate from the route, a map will come in handy. Maps are available from the better bookstores and from the local tourist information offices.
