surf art 75

Apparently, February is a big month for art in the Northeast. I'd say that popping into any one of the tremendous galleries in the Upper Right of the US on the down side of this month is a great way to get ready for spring, which as we all know, won't get here until mid-May.

For some reason, the passion for surfing as expressed through art is pretty strong in this part of the country. In case you missed the opening of "One With the Wave," (don't be thrown off by the corny name) you can check out some fantastic works by photog Steve Mullen and sculptor, Jamie Kelly.

Kelly is one of the founders of the ever-prestigious Offshore Longboard Club and Mullen is about to release a book called Surfing Jerseyland. The show runs through the 28th of February at the JCC (501 N Jerome Ave.) in Margate. If you're looking for a cultural way to spend this weekend, there are two worthy shows to check out. The first is Friday night, when the Michael Montanaro releases two new woodcuts at the Montanaro Gallery in Newport, Rhode Island in conjunction with his Book of Trees, exhibit. They are titled "Mountain Trees." Montanaro was among the first Burton Snowboards team riders, and his mountain influence is still shaping his work. The show will run through March 2nd. And if you've never been to one of Michael and Elizabeth's shows, they are two of the most gracious hosts you could ever hope to meet.

Killarney by Snapwater.

It wouldn't be impossible to then head to Brooklyn's Secret Project Robot space, adjacent to Mollusk Surf Shop to catch the Surfy Foto Show (what's going on here guys, we running out of good names?) This one will show the work of three photogs, Thomas "Snapwater" Cola, Jack Brull, and Mathew Clark. I haven't seen much of Brull's, but his lo-fi work looks very interesting. Clark and Snap are two of the Northeast's premier photogs. Their photos will be accompanied by two short films by Toddy Stewart. Roots music by Dubstar and Jah Bless.
