Hughes Placed 7th On The Corona Crown Series ratings 2008/09

Raglan’s Luke Hughes turned his exceptional summer form into a career best result placing second in the final. Hughes has been one of the stand out surfers of the summer and today he only came up one place short of his maiden victory due to the rampaging Quinn after himself scoring 15.0 in the final after only riding two waves.

Billy Stairmand continued his good run of form placing third on the Open Men’s Division of the Billabong Pro Whangamata. Billy Stairmand placed third in the final scoring 14.65 to outpoint fellow Raglan surfer Leon Santorik who placed fourth with a score of 13.10. Read more...


Billy Stairmand Defends Title And Does The Double Billy Stairmand

Hometown hero Billy Stairmand defended his Rip Curl Pro title today defeating seventeen year old giant killer Buck Woods (Gis) in the process. Combine the Open Men’s Division win with his win in the under 20 Men’s Division and the weekend becomes the most successful event ever surfed by the young Raglan surfer.

In the final, Stairmand surfed to an amazing 19.0 point heat total which included a perfect ten point ride in the final. Everything came together for the 19 year old who has only contested two of four Corona Crown Series events this year due to international commitments.

“It is so good, I haven’t been doing so good in Aussie, I have only made it through one heat in Aussie this year” commented Stairmand. “So to come home and surf through seven heats today and then win both divisions is just amazing”. Read more...

The first eight heats of the Pro Junior Men's were also run today and number one seed Stuart Kennedy survived a very close opening round heat where he placed second in his four surfer heat to advance behind the days standout Ryan Hawker (New Zealand).

Hawker was unstoppable today, displaying a dare to win attitude, pulling massive moves at will and appearing to thrive at the challenge of taking on the number one seed. Hawker's opening two rides in the heat were a 9.5 and a 9.1 and his lead was never challenged.

Micha Davis claims Corona Crown Series Title Micha Davis

Local girl Mischa Davis claimed the final of the women’s division of the Corona Super 16 at South Piha Beach also earning her the Corona Crown Series title.

Mischa Davis stole the show in the women's division when she posted a 9.0 point ride at the beginning of the 25 minute final against Jessica Santorik. Davis used her local knowledge of the break to latch onto a great lefthand wave that peeled to the beach. It allowed Davis to perform a series critical manoeuvres. A further 5.25 point ride was enough to hold out Santorik who could not secure the 7.51 point ride after several attempts.

Davis by way of winning the final in what she described as the "best comp ever" also won the Corona Crown Series pushing Jessica Santorik back to second. The other two surfers competing in the main event were Daisy Thomas (Chch) who finished third and Mount Maunganui’s Laura Rishworth who finished fourth.

Hughes Surfboards team rider Billy Stairmand surfed an impressive five heats on the finals day Rip Curl Pro held at Manu Bay Raglan. Riding his 5'10" Stealth Quadd shaped by Craig Hughes in all of them, he systematically took the waves and his fellow competitors apart. Climaxing in the final, where he put it all on the line to take his maiden victory. Big ups Billy from the crew at Raglan Surfco.

Stairmand scored an exceptional 17.75 points in the final and never looked like losing after his first wave he rode amassed 9.25 out of a possible 10. "I'm stoked man, just to get that first one, it just gave me more confidence, I'm so stoked I can't believe it, so stoked" commented Stairmand who was contesting his first ever final in the open men's division.

"I'm so stoked to be home and to do well here and also in the Mount last weekend" Stairmand commented further with regard to his string of good performances after competing in Australia at the start of the year.

Luke Hughes has ripped up a quality field of 96 young professional surfers to place 3rd at the Rip Curl Pro Junior contest in Seignosse, France.

The final hit the water at 6pm local time, in front of hundreds of people on the beach in great 3-4ft (1-1.5m) waves. Romain Cloitre (Reuninon Island) came out on top defeating Julian Wilson (AUS), Luke Hugues (NZL) and Gravett Clinton (ZAF) in the 30-minute final.

Cloitre and Hugues advanced through Semi-Final 1 in first and second respectively, ahead of American Chris Waring and Charles Martin (GLP). Cloitre’s 16.33-point heat score was the highest for the contest and Hugues’ 15.43 was the day’s third highest.

RaglanSurf team rider Mischa Davis made it through to the second round of the ICON All Girls Pro where she met top Australian seeds Pauline Menczer and Kira Townsend.

Congrats to Mischa, battling it out with Australia's top surfers is no easy feat.

Local Piha surfer Ryan Hawker conquered horrendous conditions in the last final of the day to win the under 16 boys division in the third event of the Billabong Grom Series

Hawker missed the second leg of the Billabong Grom Series and as such was out of the running to win the series. However today he jumped from 22nd to 6th on the ratings, challenging the best of the rest on only two results. Hawker will compete in the Occy Grom Comp on the Gold Coast later in the year.
